MarineMaster Boat & Barge Primer is a multi purpose, high build, oil based universal base coat. For use on wood, metal and painted surfaces, it offers the ability to easily change between contrasting colours. Being a solvent based undercoat gives this paint excellent adhesion as well as a high film thickness. This allows for the filling of pitted areas and then sanding back.
Marine High Build Undercoat is best applied by brush, roller or conventional and airless spray. For thinning and cleaning, use Palatine White Spirit.
Suitable surfaces include wood, ferrous metal and painted surfaces. Specially formulated marine undercoat paints are now more popular due to their specific properties.
Our undercoat comes in white, grey or red. This means you can select the correct colour for your Boat & Barge Professional Gloss top coat.
This undercoat paint is touch dry in 3 hours.
Palatine Paints continue to create products to grow our range of high quality and sustainable coatings. For more details on our anti corrosive primers, please take the time to read through our blog on Metal Primers. The blog has an in depth overview of the options available to the end user from the traditional Red Oxide Primer (now lead free) to the All Purpose Primer Undercoat.
This excellent undercoat became the base for the marine undercoat paint we manufacture in the UK. It has become widely accepted that solvent based undercoats have superior properties when applying to wood with the rich alkyd based resin providing flexibly and penetration to the surface.
With over 75 years of experience in the coatings sector we are also proud members of the British Coatings Federation
Surface Condition: Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free from any grease, oil, or other contaminants.
Bare Steel: Ensure the metal is free from rust and scale. Apply a suitable anti-corrosive primer, Palatine Zinc Rich Cold Galvanising Primer or Carboxide Anti-Corrosive Metal Primer, before applying the undercoat.
Bare Wood: Ensure the wood is dry and clean. Apply a suitable wood primer before the undercoat to seal the grain.
Previously Painted Surfaces: Existing coatings must be sound and well-adhered. Lightly abrade (sand) the surface with fine abrasive paper to create a “key,” then rinse and dry thoroughly.
Testing: Always perform a test patch (minimum 100mm x 100mm) on unknown surfaces to ensure compatibility and adhesion before full application.
Mixing: Stir thoroughly for approximately 2 minutes before use. Use a drill stirrer or a wooden batten (at least 25mm wide) to ensure a uniform consistency.
Methods: Apply by brush or roller. This high-build formula is designed to provide excellent opacity and “fill” minor surface imperfections.
Thinning: If necessary for specific application conditions, use Palatine White Spirit. However, thinning should be kept to a minimum to maintain the high-build properties of the coating.
Technique: Apply in even, generous coats. Because of its high-build nature, it provides an ideal foundation for high-gloss marine topcoats.
Conditions: For best results, apply in warm (minimum 10°C) and dry conditions. Do not apply when there is a risk of condensation or if the temperature is likely to drop below 10°C during application.
Please Note: The colours on the product listings are only given as a guide. This is due to the fact that every computer monitor has a different capability to display colours. In addition, everyone sees these colours differently. Sample pots are available to order upon request. Always carry out a test patch (approximately 100x100mm) before full application to ensure compatibility with previous coatings and the substrate, and to ensure the colour achieved meets your requirements. Failure to do so will result in a product refund claim not being accepted.

Q: What is the main purpose of MarineMaster Boat & Barge Undercoat?
A: This is a high-build, multi-purpose, solvent-borne universal undercoat. It is designed to be used over Marine Anti Corrosive Primer and under Boat & Barge Professional Gloss topcoat to provide a solid base and excellent adhesion.
Q: On which surfaces can this undercoat be used?
A: It is suitable for wood, metal, and previously painted surfaces. Its high-build nature makes it particularly good for filling pitted areas on metal or imperfections in wood, which can then be sanded back for a smooth finish.
Q: Why is a solvent-based undercoat preferred for marine projects?
A: Solvent-based undercoats like this one offer superior adhesion and penetration, especially on wood, where the rich alkyd resin provides flexibility and protection against the elements.
Q: Can I thin the undercoat for spray application?
A: Yes, for both airless and conventional spray, you can dilute the paint by no more than 15% by volume using Palatine White Spirit.
Q: What colours are available and how do I choose the right one?
A: It is available in Grey, Red, and White. You should choose the colour that best complements your intended Boat & Barge Professional Gloss topcoat (e.g., Grey under darker colours, White under lighter colours).
