Product Description

Grey Oxide Metal Primer Paint is an alternative option to the more traditional (lead free) Red Oxide Primer and is solvent based and air drying. It creates a smooth, protective surface to your metal. This means it is easy for you apply your top coat without too much sanding. Use it on ferrous metal surfaces.

With its rust inhibiting properties and because it is touch dry in 3 hours, Carboxide Grey Oxide Primer Paint is a great, practical choice for steel and iron surfaces. Make sure the paint cures sufficiently before applying a top coat; see the technical information for more details on this.

Carboxide grey oxide metal primer is lead free and replaces the traditional ‘red lead’ with all the same protective qualities. Red lead, while not actually banned is harmful to health and our grey oxide is a much safer alternative. If you’re concerned about working with painted surfaces that may contain lead, refer to this guide from the British Coatings Federation

Apply by brush, roller or conventional or airless spray. If painting non ferrous or galvanised metal, use Mordant Solution or Etching Primer. If you’re unsure about which primer to use, try our online chat or drop us an email: [email protected].

Coverage / Drying Times

Surface Dry: 3 hours

Hard Dry: 8 hours

Overcoat: after 24 hours. Keep coated areas dry for a minimum of 24 hours following application. Please note, drying times will be extended at low temperatures. Do not apply when ambient temperature falls below 10ºC.

Theoretical Coverage: 12 – 14m² per litre.

(Coverage rate can be affected by such variables as type and condition of substrate, type of application equipment and individual method of application.)

Thinning and Cleaning

Thinning: Dilute no more than 15% with White Spirit (if required for spray application).

Cleaning: Clean all equipment immediately after use with White Spirit.

If using more than one batch of the same colour, intermix before use.
