MarineMaster Boat & Barge Primer Paint, an anti corrosive metal primer for iron and steel. The primer is based on alkyd resin and contains modified zinc phosphate and binding pigments. This means that long term protection is provided (see below).

A superior primer suitable for use under the High Build Marine Undercoat and Boat & Barge Professional Gloss topcoat. A choice of red, white or grey gives you several options to match your topcoat.

  • Suitable for mild steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, cast and wrought iron
  • Apply by brush or roller, for spray application take a look at our Fast Dry Metal Primer
  • High in zinc phosphate for protection against corrosion

About rust and corrosion:

Both iron and steel are prone to rust because they’re generally exposed to air and moisture. Rust forms when iron reacts with oxygen and water, it then creates a coating on the metal surface. When rust isn’t treated, the reaction (or oxidisation process) continues. This results in corrosion, which causes significant damage to metal (see HSE for more details).

A quality primer like Carboxide Metal Primer paint will provide longer term protection against rust and corrosion. Our customers say it works even when a surface has already begun to ‘ginger’ with rust.

What to order? Our industrial quality primer for metal has coverage of 12 – 14m² per litre and pack sizes range from 1L right up to 5L. If you need any help or technical advice call us Mon to Fri 8am to 5pm. Alternatively use our online chat service or send us an email.

Preparation
Surface Condition: Ensure all surfaces are sound, clean, dry, and free from oil, grease, dust, and mill scale. Proper degreasing and the removal of rust and scale are essential for successful adhesion.

Ferrous Metals: For bare iron or steel, ensure the surface is prepared to a clean, bright metal finish where possible. This primer contains high levels of modified zinc phosphate to provide long-term protection against rust and corrosion in marine environments.

Non-Ferrous Metals: For surfaces such as aluminium or galvanised steel, pre-treat with Palatine Mordant Solution (T-Wash) or a suitable etching primer before applying this anti-corrosive primer.

Existing Coatings: If applying over existing sound paint, lightly abrade (sand) the surface with fine abrasive paper to create a “key.” Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry.

Rust Removers: Avoid using phosphoric acid-based rust removers as they can leave an insulating film. If used, this film must be completely removed before painting.

Testing: Always carry out a test patch (minimum 100mm x 100mm) on unknown previously painted surfaces before full application to ensure compatibility.

Application

Mixing: Stir the paint thoroughly for approximately 2 minutes using a drill stirrer or a wooden batten (at least 25mm wide) to ensure a uniform consistency. Periodically stir during use to prevent settlement of the anti-corrosive pigments.

Methods: Suitable for application by brush, roller, or spray.

Thinning:
* For brush or roller application, the product is usually applied at full strength.
* For spray application, dilute by no more than 10% by volume using Palatine White Spirit.

Technique: Apply thin, even coats. This primer is designed to provide a high-build, anti-corrosive base. If a higher level of protection is required in harsh marine conditions, successive applications can be made once the previous coat is dry.

Conditions: For best results, apply in warm (minimum 10°C) and dry conditions. Ensure the surface temperature is at least 3°C above the dew point to prevent condensation during application.

Please note: The colours on the product listings are only given as a guide. This is due to the fact that every computer monitor has a different capability to display colours. In addition, everyone sees these colours differently. Sample pots are available to order upon request. Always carry out a test patch (approximately 100x100mm) before full application to ensure compatibility with previous coatings and the substrate, and to ensure the colour achieved meets your requirements. Failure to do so will result in a product refund claim not being accepted.
