Two Hour Gloss in Action at Leigh Spinners Mill

Old engine restored at Leigh Spinners Mill using two hour gloss paint
One of the cylinders in the engine room at no.2 Mill

The Leigh Building Preservation Trust is part of a project to preserve the fine old Leigh Spinners Mill, a grade II listed building here in Lancashire. The building is a rare, surviving example of a twin mill structure of the last great mill-building generation. The magnificent engine to number two mill survives with its two cylinders named “Mayor” and “Mayoress”.

Our own two hour gloss was used in the restoration of both cylinders and is seen in smart green on the above photo of “Mayoress”. Durable and protective with a smooth, gloss finish, which is easy to achieve with a brush because of its great wet edge. Palatine’s two hour gloss is a fantastic choice for projects like this.

Handy preparation and application tips

Make sure the surface is cleaned from any grease or dust and loose flakes of rust etc. If the surface has been painted previously, rub it down with fine waterproof abrasive then rinse thoroughly. For bare surfaces, use anti corrosive or all purpose primer as detailed on on our website here.

Use fast Dry etching primer on non ferrous surfaces.  Applying in warm, dry conditions will produce the best results. Stir thoroughly with a paint stirrer or wooden baton Then apply an even coat with a brush or short to medium pile roller. If the surface is textured, use a long pile roller. Two hour gloss can be sprayed with an airless or conventional spray (diluting with no more than 10% ratio of white spirit). Apply a thin film coat then allow to dry. You can then apply a second coat at full strength to prolong the lifespan and performance of coating.

More exciting projects

Our paints have been used in the restoration and creation of the Lancashire Mining Museum, another project local to us here in Leigh, Lancashire and a testament to the area’s mining traditions. We hope to bring you some more information and images very soon, so keep coming back! We always value your feedback, so if you’ve used any of our paint in any way do get in touch. We would love to see any photos you have (before and afters are fabulous but we welcome them all) so, please send images via the contact details on this site, or tag us on social media.
