Palatine Garden Furniture Primer Undercoat is a coating designed for use as a primer or undercoat for Palatine Professional Garden Furniture Paint when applying it to garden furniture such as chairs, tables and benches. An oil based primer undercoat that will provide an even surface to ensure you achieve the best finish for your furniture.
Our selection of different colours also allows you to change an existing topcoat in a timely and cost-effective way. The undercoat can be applied to an existing garden furniture paint without having to remove it. This will then bridge the colour difference between the existing topcoat colour and the new one, preventing the original colour from showing through the new colour.
Touch dry in 3 hours and hard dry in 8 hours. Leave 24 hours before overcoating.
Estimated Coverage: 12 to 14sqm per litre
Also available as an Aerosol.
We are a proud member of the British Coatings Federation.
Surface Cleaning: Ensure the area is free from dust, oil, grease, wax, and surface contaminants.
Surface Condition: Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from loose or flaking material, mill scale, and rust.
Bare Wood: Sand the wood in the direction of the grain to create a smooth surface. For aged wood, ensure any wood chippings or loose fibers are removed.
Metals:
* Ferrous Metals (Steel/Iron): Remove rust and scale, ideally by grit blasting or thorough wire brushing.
* Non-Ferrous Metals (Galvanised/Aluminium): Pre-treat with a mordant solution or use a dedicated etching primer.
Previously Painted Surfaces: If the existing coating is sound and non-flaking, abrade it (sand) to provide a “key” for the new primer to grip.
Testing: Always carry out a test patch (approx. 100x100mm) to ensure compatibility with previous coatings/substrates and to verify the colour.
Environmental Conditions: Best results are obtained in warm (minimum 10°C) and dry conditions. Avoid applying if the temperature is below the dew point to prevent contamination.
Mixing: Stir thoroughly for approximately 2 minutes before use. A drill stirrer or a wooden batten at least 25mm (2 inches) wide is ideal. Stir periodically during use to prevent the product from settling or thickening.
Method: Apply an even coat using a brush, roller, or spray.
* Brush/Roller: Work the product well into the surface. Use a solvent-resistant sleeve for rollers.
* Wood Surfaces: A minimum of two coats is recommended for optimal sealing and protection.
Subsequent Coats: The required thickness can be built up by successive applications once the previous coat is dry. If more than 5 days pass between coats, the surface should be lightly abraded again.
Please Note: The colours on the product listings are only given as a guide. This is due to the fact that every computer monitor has a different capability to display colours. In addition, everyone sees these colours differently. Sample pots are available to order upon request. Always carry out a test patch (approximately 100x100mm) before full application
to ensure compatibility with previous coatings and the substrate, and to ensure the colour achieved meets your requirements. Failure to do so will result in a product refund claim not being accepted.

A: Yes, the product is safe for pets and children once it is fully dry. Please ensure that treated furniture is left to cure completely before use.
Q: Do I need to use a different primer for bare metal?
A: While this works on wood, for bare metal furniture you should consider using a specialized Palatine Metal Primer or Zinc Rich Cold Galvanising Primer for enhanced anti-corrosive protection.
Q: What should I use to clean my brushes?
A: Because this is a solvent-based product, you must use white spirit to clean your tools and dispose of any waste responsibly.
