Palatine Hull Blacking is a bitumen based coating designed to be applied directly to the hull of a boat. The coating provides protection from water and weather, preventing the hull from becoming worn and damaged from everyday use of the boat.
Palatine Hull Blacking is suitable for narrowboats, cruisers and other types of inland waterway vessels. Please note that as this is a bitumen based coating, it can only be overcoated by other bitumen based products. The bitumen based hull blacking will bleed through standard oil and water based paints.
Our friendly technical team are available to contact by phone or web chat during our opening hours, where we can answer any questions you may have. This includes topics such as surface compatibility, preparation and application. Outside of our opening hours, you are welcome to send an email, which are checked each working morning.
We also have a range of other marine coatings available, such as our Marine Satin and Gloss topcoats. These are available in a variety of colours and are suitable for use on a range of different surfaces, including wood, metal, concrete and GRP.
We also supply an Marine Anti-slip Paint, suitable for wooden, metal and concrete floors, step and ramps. The textured surface makes areas safer for foot traffic, especially in wet weather or areas near the water.
Surface Condition: Ensure the area is completely free from dust, oil, grease, old coatings, and surface contaminants. Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from loose or flaking material, rust, and millscale.
Priming:
* For maximum protection, prime bare surfaces with Palatine Zinc Rich Primer or Palatine Metal Primer.
* For non-ferrous metals, use Etching Primer.
Previous Coatings: Rub down previously gloss-painted surfaces with fine waterproof abrasive paper and rinse thoroughly.
Compatibility Warning: This is a bitumen-based coating. It can only be overcoated by other bitumen-based products. Standard oil or water-based paints will suffer from “bleeding” if applied over this product.
Mixing: Mix thoroughly for approximately 2 minutes using a drill stirrer or a wooden batten (at least 25mm wide).
Environmental Conditions: Best results are obtained in warm (minimum 10°C), dry conditions.
Methods: Suitable for application by brush, roller, dip, or spray.
* Brush/Roller: Apply an even coat using a brush or short-to-medium pile roller on smooth surfaces (long pile for textured surfaces).
* Spray: For conventional or HVLP spray, a dilution ratio of no more than 10% by volume is recommended with Palatine White Spirit.
Coats: A minimum of two coats is recommended to ensure adequate protection and performance.
Post-Application: Keep coated areas dry for a minimum of 24 hours following application.
Pack Sizes: 1 Litre, 2.5 Litre, 5 Litre, 25 Litre.
(Based on standard conditions of 20°C)
Surface Dry: 2 – 5 hours.
Hard Dry: N/A (Drying times are significantly longer in cold or damp conditions).
Overcoat: 2 coats are recommended. Specific overcoat window is not stated, but typically follows surface dry time.
Best results are obtained in warm (minimum 10°C), dry conditions. Drying time will vary according to temperature and humidity e.g. the drying times quoted will be significantly longer in cold, damp conditions.
Theoretical Coverage: 7 – 10m² per litre depending on surface to be treated. It is recommended to apply 2 coats.
(Coverage rate can be affected by such variables as type and condition of substrate, type of application equipment and individual method of application.)
Thinning: Use Palatine White Spirit. For spray application, a dilution ratio of no more than 10% by volume is recommended.
Cleaning: Clean all equipment immediately after use with Palatine White Spirit.
If using more than one batch of the same colour, intermix before use (N/A for this product).
Q: What is the main purpose of Palatine Hull Blacking?
A: This is a bitumen-based coating specifically designed for boat hulls, providing essential protection against water and weather damage to prevent the hull from wearing down during everyday use.
Q: What types of boats is this product suitable for?
A: It is ideal for narrowboats, cruisers, and other inland waterway vessels with steel, wood, or iron hulls.
Q: Can I paint over the hull blacking with a standard coloured paint?
A: No. Because this is a bitumen-based product, it can only be overcoated by other bitumen-based products. Standard oil or water-based paints will suffer from “bleeding” if applied over it.
Q: Can I thin the paint for spraying?
A: Yes, for spray application, you can dilute the product by no more than ten percent by volume using Palatine White Spirit.
Q: Are there any delivery considerations for the largest size?
A: For twenty-five litre items, please allow one to two working days for delivery due to the specialized transport required for hazardous goods.
