Product Description

Carbosil Marine Gloss Paint is a premium grade alkyd coating designed for use in marine environments. It can be used on all marine surfaces, including boat structures, deck surfaces, bridges, cargo and storage areas, tanks and super structures. The paint adheres to wood, metal, GRP and a range of other materials, so can be applied to almost any surface in a marine environment such as a dock or marina.

The silicone and urethane resins in the paint provide a highly weather resistant gloss finish that is both durable and high covering. This ensures the paint withstands the conditions expected of a marine environment and has an adequate lifespan to avoid constant repainting.

We have a wide range of standard colours available to provide many options for the look of boats and structures. If you’re looking for a different colour, or have an existing colour you would like to match, please contact us. Our friendly team can advise you on our custom tinting service and help you find the colour you’re looking for.

At Palatine Paints, we manufacture our own Marine Gloss instead of using an external supplier. This gives us a much greater understanding and knowledge of the product and its properties than most other suppliers of similar paints.

Carbosil Marine Gloss Paint Application

Preparation: On previously painted surfaces, ensure it is sound and non-flaking. Abrade the surface preferably by mechanical abrasion to provide a “key” and maximise adhesion of the subsequent coating. For metal surfaces the standard grades of cleanliness for abrasive blast cleaning in accordance with BS EN ISO 8501-1[1] are:

  • Sa 1 – Light blast cleaning
  • Sa 2 – Thorough blast cleaning
  • Sa 2½ – Very thorough blast cleaning
  • Sa 3 – Blast cleaning to visually clean steel

Mixing: Stir the paint with a drill stirrer or wooden baton at least 2” wide. Continue to stir during application to avoid thickening of the product.

Application: Apply by brush, roller or spray and work well into the surface. Avoid applying the paint to thickly to avoid delaying drying times. The second and subsequent coats can be applied as soon as the first / preceding coat is dry usually after 12-24 hours, and should be applied within 5 days.

If more than 5 days elapse, the first coat should be lightly abraded before the second coat is applied. Avoid power washing the surface for 7 days.

Carbosil Marine Gloss Paint is touch dry in 3 hours and hard dry in 24 hours. Once applied, leave for 16 hours before overcoating.

Expected Coverage: 12 to 14m² per litre

For thinning and cleaning, use white spirit.

Preparation:

To ensure a durable and effective bilge paint application, it’s crucial to properly prepare the surface. Start by cleaning the substrate thoroughly to remove any dirt, grease, or oil. You can use a degreaser or mineral spirits for this step. Next, inspect the surface for any rust or old paint. If present, remove the rust using a wire brush, sandpaper, grinder or suitable rust remover / treatment. For old paint, use a paint stripper or sand it down until you reach the bare metal. Once the surface is clean and free of rust and old paint, sand it with fine-grit sandpaper to create a smooth and slightly roughened surface for better paint adhesion. Finally, wipe down the steel with a clean cloth to remove any dust or debris before applying our rust-inhibitive marine primer. After the primer has dried, you can proceed with applying our high build marine undercoat and then one but preferably two coats of the bilge paint.

Application:

Best results are obtained in warm (minimum 10°C), dry conditions.

Mix thoroughly for approximately 2 minutes using a drill stirrer. A wooden batten at least 25mm wide is also ideal.
Apply an even coat using a brush, short to medium pile roller on smooth surfaces.

For spray application by either airless or conventional spray a dilution ration of no more than 10% is recommended with Palatine White Spirit by volume.
A second coat can be applied at full strength. This will prolong the life and performance of the coating.
For application onto wooden surfaces, a minimum of two coats is recommended.

Drying Time @ 20ºC: Drying times will be extended at low temperatures.
Do not apply when ambient temperature falls below 5ºC or relative humidity exceeds 90%.
Surface dry @ 20ºC: 1 hours
Hard dry @ 20ºC: 4 hours
Overcoat@ 20ºC: After 8 hours (temperature dependent).

Theoretical Coverage: 12 – 14m² per litre.
(Coverage rate can be affected by such variables as type and condition of substrate, type of application equipment and individual method of application.)
Storage: Store in temperature range 5-40ºC

Thinners: White Spirit
