Product Description

Xylene Thinners (Mixed Xylene Solvent)

Carbosolv Xylene Thinners is a strong aromatic solvent commonly used in the coatings industry as a xylene paint thinner and for cleaning paint equipment. It’s used to reduce viscosity in compatible solvent-based products and to help with tool and equipment clean-down.

Common uses:

Carbosolv Xylene Thinners is a mixed xylene solvent used in the coatings industry as a paint thinner and for cleaning equipment after using compatible solvent-based products.

  • Thinning compatible solvent-based paints and coatings (improves flow for brush or spray)
  • Cleaning tools and equipment after painting

Compatibility matters: xylene is not universal. Therefore, always check the product label/TDS for compatibility before thinning. or contact us and we’ll confirm suitability. We use xylene paint thinners to thin several of our paints, including:

Cleaning Tools & Equipment

Xylene solvent can be used for cleaning tools and equipment after using compatible solvent-based coatings. Use in well-ventilated areas and follow all safety guidance.

    Preparation

Surface Cleaning: Xylene is a high-strength solvent effective for removing paint residues, stains, grease, and other contaminants. For pre-treatment, wipe the surface with a lint-free cloth moistened with the thinner to ensure the area is clean before painting.

Compatibility Check: This is a strong chemical solvent. Only use with solvent-resistant brushes and rollers. Do not use with standard foam rollers, as the solvent can dissolve or damage them.

Safety Setup: Ensure the workspace is well-ventilated. Wear appropriate PPE, including solvent-resistant gloves and eye protection.

    Application & Thinning

Target Paints: Specifically designed for thinning high-performance coatings such as:
    * Fast Dry Gloss, Fast Dry Semi-Gloss, and Metal Primers.
    * Hammershield (Smooth & Hammered).
    * Carbochlor Chlorinated Rubber Paint.

Thinning for Spraying: Always refer to the specific paint’s Technical Data Sheet (TDS) for exact ratios, but typical guidelines are:
    * Top Coats: Approximately 1 part thinner to 10 parts paint (10% dilution).
    * Primers: Approximately 1.5 parts thinner to 10 parts paint (15% dilution).

Mixing: Add the thinner gradually to the paint while stirring continuously to achieve a smooth, even consistency for spraying or brushing.

    Cleaning

Equipment: Ideal for cleaning spray guns, brushes, and metal trays immediately after using oil-based or industrial paints.

Maintenance: After cleaning spray equipment, flush a small amount of clean xylene through the gun to ensure no paint residue remains in the internal valves or nozzles.

    Safety & Storage

Flammability: Xylene is highly flammable with a flash point of approx. 30°C. Keep away from heat, sparks, open flames, and hot surfaces. No smoking during use.

Storage: Store in the original tightly closed container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place (ideally between 5°C and 25°C). Keep the container upright to prevent leakage.

Health Hazard: Avoid breathing vapours or spray mist. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting and seek medical medical attention immediately.

Pack Sizes: 1 Litre, 2.5 Litre, 5 Litre, 25 Litre, and 205 Litre.

    Usage / Application

Specifically designed for: Fast Dry Gloss, Fast Dry Semi-Gloss, Fast Dry Metal Primer, Hammershield (Smooth & Hammered), and Carbochlor Chlorinated Rubber Paint.

    Thinning for Spraying:

Top Coats: Typically 1 part thinner to 10 parts paint (approx. 10%).

Primers (e.g., Fast Dry Metal): Typically 1.5 parts thinner to 10 parts paint (approx. 15%).

Note: Always refer to the technical data sheet of the specific paint being used for exact dilution ratios.

    Cleaning

Equipment: Ideal for cleaning spray guns, brushes, and equipment after using the compatible paints listed above.

Surface Cleaning: Effective for removing paint residues, stains, and other contaminants from surfaces.

Q: What is the main purpose of Carbosolv Xylene Thinners?
A: This is a high-strength solvent used to thin oil-based paints, varnishes, and enamels, ensuring a smooth and even application when spraying or brushing.

Q: Which Palatine Paints products is this thinner specifically designed for?
A: It is used for our range of fast-drying paints (Gloss, Semi-Gloss, and Metal Primer), as well as Hammershield and Carbochlor chlorinated rubber paint.

Q: Can I use this thinner to clean my painting equipment?
A: Yes, its strong dissolving power makes it excellent for cleaning spray guns, solvent-resistant rollers, and brushes after using oil-based or industrial paints, always check if it is compatible with the products you are cleaning.

Q: Is Xylene suitable for use on all types of rollers?
A: No, you should only use it with solvent-resistant rollers and brushes, as the strong chemicals can dissolve or damage standard foam rollers.

Q: Can this product be used in the printing industry?
A: Yes, it is widely used in ink manufacturing to dissolve resins and pigments, helping to improve ink stability and maintain consistent colours.

A: Carbosolv Xylene Thinners is a mixed xylene solvent used to thin compatible solvent-based paints and coatings, and to help clean tools and equipment after using compatible products. Always check compatibility before use.
Q: Is xylene the same as xylol?

A: Xylene is commonly referred to as xylol in the coatings and solvent industry. In practice, people often use the terms interchangeably. If you need a specific grade/spec, check the SDS or contact us.
Q: Can I use xylene thinners to thin paint?

A: Yes — if the paint/coating is compatible with xylene. Add small amounts at a time, mix thoroughly, and test before full application. If you’re unsure, tell us what product you’re using and we’ll advise.
Q: Which Palatine Paints products is this thinner designed for?

Q: What’s the difference between xylene and white spirit?

A: They’re different solvents used for different products. Xylene is a stronger aromatic solvent often used with specific industrial coatings, while white spirit is commonly used with many general solvent-based paints. Always follow the coating manufacturer’s recommended thinner.
Q: Is xylene suitable for all rollers and brushes?

A: Not always. Use solvent-resistant rollers, brushes and seals where appropriate, as some plastics/foams can soften or degrade with strong solvents. If in doubt, test on a small area first.
