Profinish Satin paint is a decorative and protective top coat for interior and exterior use on wood or metal. If you’re looking for a contemporary alternative to a high gloss finish, then satin is a good choice. A satin finish means your surface will reflect some light, but won’t have the high ‘mirror’ finish of gloss. Professional satin finish paint is available in many colours, including black, white, and anthracite grey.
With its high opacity, Profinish Satin paint provides great looking surface which is touch dry in 3 hours. Because you can use it on both woodwork and metal, it’s great for coordinating different surfaces giving quick drying satin finish paint to skirting boards, architraves, doors, window frames, radiators and more.
Ideal for use as exterior wood paint or metal paint and is highly popular for garage doors and front doors (check out the reviews below). If you are unsure about the differences between various paint finishes? The British Coatings Federation has a good overview here.
If a matt finish is what you’re after, then Palatine Professional Flat Oil Enamel is a great choice. For a high gloss finish try Truglos Professional Gloss.
Do I need a primer? We usually recommend a primer unless you’re painting over a previously painted surface; in which case, lightly sand before painting.
Please note: The colours shown here are only a guide. This is due to the fact that every computer monitor has a different capability to display colours. In addition, everyone sees these colours differently.

Surface Condition: Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from dust, oil, grease, old coatings, millscale, rust, and scale.
Previously Painted Surfaces: If the existing finish is sound, lightly sand the surface with fine waterproof abrasive paper to create a “key” for adhesion, then rinse thoroughly. No primer is usually needed for sound, previously painted surfaces.
Bare Surfaces:
* Wood & Metal: Prime bare surfaces with Anti-Corrosive Metal Primer or All Purpose Primer/Undercoat.
* Non-Ferrous Metals: Use Palatine Fast Dry Etching Primer.
Environmental Conditions: Best results are achieved in warm (minimum 10°C) and dry conditions.
Safety: The product is flammable. Ensure proper ventilation and keep away from heat sources or open flames.
Mixing: Stir thoroughly for approximately 2 minutes using a drill stirrer or a wooden batten (at least 25mm wide).
Methods:
* Brush: Apply an even coat. The paint is formulated for a “wet edge” to help achieve a smooth finish.
* Roller: Use a short-to-medium pile roller for smooth surfaces.
* Spray: If thinning is required for spray application, use Palatine White Spirit.
Coats: Applying two coats is often recommended (especially for exterior surfaces like garage or front doors) to ensure long-term durability and protection.
Please note: The colours on the product listings are only given as a guide. This is due to the fact that every computer monitor has a different capability to display colours. In addition, everyone sees these colours differently. Sample pots are available to order upon request. Always carry out a test patch (approximately 100x100mm) before full application to ensure compatibility with previous coatings and the substrate, and to ensure the colour achieved meets your requirements. Failure to do so will result in a product refund claim not being accepted.
Colours Available: BS 381C, BS4800 and Ral Classic range.

(Coverage rate can be affected by such variables as type and condition of substrate, type of application equipment and individual method of application.)

If using more than one batch of the same colour, intermix before use.
Q: What is Profinish Satin Paint?
A: This is a decorative and protective topcoat designed for both interior and exterior use. It offers a contemporary alternative to high gloss, providing a finish that reflects some light without the intense “mirror” effect of a traditional gloss paint.
Q: Where can this paint be used?
A: It is suitable for both wood and metal surfaces. Internally, it is ideal for skirting boards, architraves, doors, window frames, and radiators. Externally, it is highly popular for transforming front doors and garage doors, as well as protectively coating exterior joinery and metalwork.
Q: What are the key performance features of this satin paint?
A: The paint is based on a modified alkyd resin and provides high opacity and durable, long-term protection. It is touch dry in approximately three hours and is formulated for excellent flow-out and a “wet edge,” which helps users achieve a smooth, professional finish.
Q: Is a primer required before application?
A: A primer is generally recommended for bare surfaces. Bare metal should be treated with Anti-Corrosive Metal Primer or All Purpose Primer/Undercoat, while non-ferrous metals require an Etching Primer. If you are painting over an existing finish, you can often skip the primer by lightly sanding the surface first to ensure good adhesion.
Q: What should I use for thinning the paint or cleaning my tools?
A: You should use Palatine White Spirit for thinning the product and for cleaning your brushes, rollers, and equipment after use.
