Product Description

Profinish Matt Paint is a solvent-borne, matt, flat oil enamel. It is formulated as a decorative top coat whilst also providing durable long term protection. This matt paint is suitable for interior and exterior use for wood, metal and other surfaces and available in black, white and a wide range of colours.

Often referred to as ‘matt black’ our flat oil enamel is also available in colour with our facility to match to RAL / BS colour codes. Because you can use it on both woodwork and metal, it’s great for coordinating. Use on a variety of different surfaces such as skirting boards, window frames, radiators etc. Can also be used for exterior wood and metal surfaces.

Not sure about the differences between various finishes? The British Coatings Federation has a good overview here.

Palatine Professional Flat Oil Enamel produces a stylish and contemporary matt finish for wood and metal surfaces. It is also available in satin and as a gloss finish.

  • Based on modified alkyd resin, (lead free) containing organic and inorganic pigments
  • Touch dry in 3 hours
  • Excellent wet edge and flow out
  • Also available in Anthracite Grey RAL 7016

If you’re after a hard wearing, non reflective appearance then Palatine Professional Flat Oil will be a good choice. For a more reflective appearance, try satin finish or gloss finish.

Preparation

Surface Condition: Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free from dust, oil, grease, old coatings, millscale, and rust.

Metal Preparation:
* Steelwork should be degreased and cleared of rust and scale.
* Bare Steel/General Surfaces: Prime with Palatine Anti-Corrosive Metal Primer or Carboxide All Purpose Primer/Undercoat.
* Non-Ferrous Metals: Use Etching Primer.

Previously Painted Surfaces: Rub down previous gloss finishes with fine waterproof abrasive paper to provide a “key” for the new coating.

Environmental Conditions: Best results are achieved in warm (minimum 10°C) and dry conditions. Do not apply if the temperature falls below 10°C.

Test Patch: Always carry out a test patch (approx. 100x100mm) to check for colour accuracy and compatibility with the substrate or previous coatings.

Application

Mixing: Stir thoroughly for approximately 2 minutes using a drill stirrer or a wooden batten (at least 25mm wide).

Methods:
* Brush/Roller: Apply an even coat. The product features a unique delayed “wet edge” time, allowing for a smooth finish on larger areas.
* Spray: For airless or conventional spray, thin by no more than 10% using Palatine White Spirit.

Protection: Keep coated areas dry for at least 24 hours following application to ensure proper curing.

Please note: The colours on the product listings are only given as a guide. This is due to the fact that every computer monitor has a different capability to display colours. In addition, everyone sees these colours differently. Sample pots are available to order upon request. Always carry out a test patch (approximately 100x100mm) before full application
to ensure compatibility with previous coatings and the substrate, and to ensure the colour achieved meets your requirements. Failure to do so will result in a product refund claim not being accepted.

Colours Available: BS 381C, BS4800 and Ral Classic range.

Pack Sizes: 500 ml, 1 Litre, 2.5 Litre, 5 Litre.

Product Documents

Q: What is Palatine Professional Flat Oil Enamel?
A: This is a solvent-borne, oil-based paint designed to provide a decorative, flat matt topcoat. It is formulated to offer durable, long-term protection for a variety of surfaces and is suitable for both interior and exterior applications.

Q: Where can this paint be used?
A: It is highly versatile and can be applied to both woodwork and metal. Common internal uses include skirting boards, window frames, and radiators. For external projects, it is effective on joinery and metalwork, such as drainpipes. Because it works on multiple substrates, it is an excellent choice for coordinating finishes throughout a space.

Q: What kind of finish does it produce?
A: This enamel produces a stylish and contemporary non-reflective matt finish. It is often used for projects requiring a “matt black” look, though it is available in a wide variety of colors. For those preferring more shine, the product is also available in satin and gloss finishes.

Q: Is a primer necessary?
A: Yes, bare surfaces should be primed before applying the topcoat. For steel and general surfaces, Palatine Anti-Corrosive Metal Primer or All Purpose Primer/Undercoat is recommended. Non-ferrous metals require an etching primer. If you are painting over existing gloss surfaces, they should be rubbed down with fine abrasive paper and cleaned first.

Q: How do I clean my brushes and equipment?
A: Since this is an oil-based product, you should use Palatine White Spirit for both thinning the paint and cleaning your application tools.

used for a panelled internal wall, wanted a matt finish, this is superb quality paint, and i mean better than dulux , crown, johnsons ETC…. super quick delivery…. Wonder if they can match farrow and ball colours?

  2. Nicholas Garner (verified owner)

Great service and great product. Coverage is good and finish is matt in the extreme, just what I wanted. Drying time (18ºC) quicker than suggested and “unique delayed wet edge” didn’t seem to make much difference, so best to apply quite quickly. I painted a staircase and, as expected, the finish shows scuff marks, although this tendency seems to reduce as the paint hardens over time. Cleaning with warm soapy water does not affect the matt finish. I’ll use this again.

  3. John D Wantling

Solid oil based paint for exterior use. Done my drain pipes in matt black, which has a mild eggshell finish. Excellent paint. Use it all the time. My decorator loves it.

  4. Alexandra Rearie (verified owner)

Fabulous product. Painted my £25 Facebook bargain buy wooden swing with it. Looks fantastic in the Matt black and should last for years.

  5. Frederick S (verified owner)
