Carboxide Red Oxide Primer is a traditional, lead-free, solvent-based red oxide primer paint designed to create a protective, rust-inhibiting layer on ferrous metal (steel and iron) and suitable wood surfaces. It’s a high-build, air-drying primer that provides a tough base for compatible finishing coats.

Where to use red oxide primer paint

  • Steel and ironwork (gates, railings, fabrication and general maintenance)
  • Workshop and site repairs where a tough, protective primer is required
  • Suitable wood surfaces where a solvent-based primer system is preferred

Key benefits

  • Solvent-based, high-build primer for durable coverage
  • Rust-inhibiting protective basecoat for ferrous metals
  • Touch dry in around 3 hours (conditions dependent)

Application guidance

  • Apply by brush, roller, conventional spray or airless spray
  • Ensure the surface is clean, dry and free from loose rust, mill scale and contaminants
  • Allow the primer to cure sufficiently before applying a topcoat (see the Technical Information tab for guidance)

Galvanised and non-ferrous metals

If painting galvanised or non-ferrous metals, do not use this as your primary coating. Instead, use Mordant Solution (T-Wash) or an Etching Primer to ensure proper adhesion.

Also available: Black and Grey.

    Preparation

Surface Cleaning: Ensure the area is free from dust, oil, grease, old coatings, and contaminants.

Ferrous Metals (Steel/Iron): For enhanced protection, consider priming bare surfaces first with Zinc Rich Cold Galvanising Primer.

Non-Ferrous/Galvanised Metals: This primer should not be applied directly. Use a Mordant Solution (T-wash) or an Etching Primer first to ensure proper adhesion.

Wood: Ensure the surface is clean. A minimum of two coats is recommended for wooden surfaces.

Environmental Conditions: Best results are obtained in warm (minimum 10°C) and dry conditions. Do not apply if the temperature is below 10°C.

Test Patch: Carry out a test patch (~100x100mm) to check compatibility with previous coatings.

    Application

Mixing: Stir thoroughly for approximately 2 minutes using a drill stirrer or a wooden batten (at least 25mm wide).

    Methods:
Brush/Roller: Apply an even coat. Use a short-to-medium pile roller for smooth surfaces and a long pile roller for others.
Spray: If using airless or conventional spray, thin the primer by no more than 15% by volume using Palatine White Spirit.

Coats: Ensure the primer cures sufficiently before applying a top coat.

Please note: The colours on the product listings are only given as a guide. This is due to the fact that every computer monitor has a different capability to display colours. In addition, everyone sees these colours differently. Sample pots are available to order upon request. Always carry out a test patch (approximately 100x100mm) before full application to ensure compatibility with previous coatings and the substrate, and to ensure the colour achieved meets your requirements. Failure to do so will result in a product refund claim not being accepted.

    Colours Available: Grey, Red

    Pack Sizes: 500ml, 1 Lire, 2.5 Litre, 5 Litre, 20 Litre

    Coverage / Drying Times

(Based on standard conditions of 20°C)

    Surface Dry: 3 hours

    Hard Dry: 8 hours

Overcoat: after 24 hours. Keep coated areas dry for a minimum of 24 hours following application. Please note, drying times will be extended at low temperatures. Do not apply when ambient temperature falls below 10ºC

    Theoretical Coverage: 12 – 14m² per litre.

(Coverage rate can be affected by such variables as type and condition of substrate, type of application equipment and individual method of application.)

    Thinning and Cleaning

Thinning: Dilute up to 15% with Palatine White Spirit (specifically for spray application).

Cleaning: Clean all equipment immediately after use with Palatine White Spirit.

If using more than one batch of the same colour, intermix before use. If painting non-ferrous or galvanised metal, use Mordant Solution or Etching Primer first. For wood, a minimum of two coats is recommended.

    Product Documents

Q: What is Palatine Carboxide Red Oxide Primer?
A: This is a traditional, lead-free, high-build solvent-borne primer designed to create a protective, rust-inhibiting layer on metal and wood surfaces.

Q: Is this product a direct replacement for old-fashioned “red lead” paint?
A: This modern formulation replaces traditional red lead with a safer, lead-free alternative that provides the same high-quality protective properties without the associated health risks.

Q: On which surfaces can I effectively use this primer?
A: It is ideal for ferrous metal surfaces such as steel and iron, but it is also highly effective as a tough primer coat for wooden surfaces.

Q: Can I use this primer on galvanised or non-ferrous metals?
A: You should not use this as your primary coating for these surfaces; instead, you must first apply a Mordant Solution (T-Wash) or an Etching Primer to ensure the paint adheres properly.

Q: Should I thin the paint if I am using a spray gun?
A: If you choose to spray the product, you should thin it by no more than 15% by volume using Palatine White Spirit.
