Product Description

MarineGuard Gloss Paint is a premium grade alkyd coating designed for use in marine environments. It can be used on all marine surfaces, including boat structures, deck surfaces, bridges, cargo and storage areas, tanks and super structures. The paint adheres to wood, metal, GRP and a range of other materials, so can be applied to almost any surface in a marine environment such as a dock or marina.

The silicone and urethane resins in the paint provide a highly weather resistant gloss finish that is both durable and high covering. This ensures the paint withstands the conditions expected of a marine environment and has an adequate lifespan to avoid constant repainting.

We have a wide range of standard colours available to provide many options for the look of boats and structures. If you’re looking for a different colour, or have an existing colour you would like to match, please contact us. Our friendly team can advise you on our custom tinting service and help you find the colour you’re looking for.

At Palatine Paints, we manufacture our own Marine Gloss instead of using an external supplier. This gives us a much greater understanding and knowledge of the product and its properties than most other suppliers of similar paints.

MarineGuard Gloss Paint Paint Application

Preparation: On previously painted surfaces, ensure it is sound and non-flaking. Abrade the surface preferably by mechanical abrasion to provide a “key” and maximise adhesion of the subsequent coating. For metal surfaces the standard grades of cleanliness for abrasive blast cleaning in accordance with BS EN ISO 8501-1[1] are:

  • Sa 1 – Light blast cleaning
  • Sa 2 – Thorough blast cleaning
  • Sa 2½ – Very thorough blast cleaning
  • Sa 3 – Blast cleaning to visually clean steel

Mixing: Stir the paint with a drill stirrer or wooden baton at least 2” wide. Continue to stir during application to avoid thickening of the product.

Application: Apply by brush, roller or spray and work well into the surface. Avoid applying the paint to thickly to avoid delaying drying times. The second and subsequent coats can be applied as soon as the first / preceding coat is dry usually after 12-24 hours, and should be applied within 5 days.

If more than 5 days elapse, the first coat should be lightly abraded before the second coat is applied. Avoid power washing the surface for 7 days.

MarineGuard Gloss Paint is touch dry in 3 hours and hard dry in 24 hours. Once applied, leave for 16 hours before overcoating.

Expected Coverage: 12 to 14m² per litre

For thinning and cleaning, use white spirit.

Preparation

Surface Condition: Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free from any dust, oil, grease, and salt contamination.

Bare Steel: Metal must be free from rust and scale. Prime with a high-quality anti-corrosive primer, such as Palatine Marine Anti-Corrosive Metal Primer, before applying the gloss finish.

Bare Wood: Ensure the wood is dry and clean. Apply a suitable wood primer/sealer followed by Palatine Marine Undercoat to provide a smooth, uniform base.

Previously Painted Surfaces: Existing coatings must be sound and well-adhered. Lightly abrade (sand) the surface with fine abrasive paper to create a “key” for the new paint. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water to remove any salt residue and allow to dry completely. For metal surfaces, prepare by abrasive blast cleaning to the following standards (BS EN ISO 8501-1):
* Sa 1 – Light blast cleaning
* Sa 2 – Thorough blast cleaning
* Sa 2½ – Very thorough blast cleaning
* Sa 3 – Blast cleaning to visually clean steel

Undercoating: For the best depth of colour and a professional finish, it is recommended to apply Palatine High Build Marine Undercoat in a coordinating shade before the final gloss coats.

Testing: Always carry out a test patch (approx. 100mm x 100mm) to check for compatibility with the substrate or previous coatings and to confirm the colour and sheen.

Application

Mixing: Stir the paint thoroughly for approximately 2 minutes before use. A drill stirrer or a wooden batten at least 25mm wide is recommended to ensure the matting agents are fully dispersed for a consistent gloss sheen.

Methods: Apply using a high-quality natural bristle brush or a short-pile solvent-resistant roller.

Thinning:
* Brush/Roller: Usually applied at full strength. If required in very cold conditions, thin by no more than 5% with Palatine White Spirit.
* Spray Application: Dilute by approximately 10% by volume with Palatine White Spirit for airless or conventional spray.

Technique: Apply in thin, even coats. Avoid over-working the paint; apply a full, even coat and allow it to level naturally to ensure a uniform gloss appearance without streaks.

Coating System: Two coats are recommended for maximum durability and consistent sheen.

Conditions: For best results, apply in warm (minimum 10°C) and dry conditions. Avoid painting in direct strong sunlight or if the temperature is likely to drop below 10°C (or if the dew point is reached) during application and drying.

Colours Available: Over 25 colours including Custom tinting that is also available.

Pack Sizes: 1 Litre, 2.5 Litre, 5 Litre.

Coverage / Drying Times

(Based on standard conditions of 20°C)

Surface Dry: 3 hours.

Hard Dry: 24 hours.

Overcoat: After 16 hours. Subsequent coats should be applied within 5 days; if more than 5 days elapse, the surface must be lightly abraded. Avoid power washing the surface for at least 7 days to allow full curing.

Theoretical Coverage: 12 – 14m² per litre.

(Coverage rate can be affected by such variables as type and condition of substrate, type of application equipment and individual method of application.)

Thinning and Cleaning

Thinning: Use White Spirit.

Cleaning: Clean all equipment immediately after use with White Spirit.

If using more than one batch of the same colour, intermix before use.
