MarineMaster Boat & Barge Gloss is a protective, decorative paint designed to give long term, durable protection to your marine surfaces, including narrow boats, canal boats and barges. A versatile, water resistant, solvent borne paint that is suitable for both wood and metal. This makes it an excellent coating for narrow boats and canal barges, as well as other boats or cruisers.
With superb wet edge and flow out, this paint is ideal both for larger surface areas and also for the fine lines and artwork involved in boat detailing and narrow boat painting.
MarineMaster Boat & Barge Gloss is a high gloss marine enamel paint, based on vinyl toluene modified alkyd resin. It dries to a hard finish and is touch dry in 2 hours. Use Boat & Barge Professional Gloss over selected primers from Palatine’s range including red oxide primer and anti-corrosive metal primer or over previously painted surfaces.
Boat & Barge paint is best applied by brush or roller. However, it can also be sprayed. If spraying, dilute with no more than 10% of white spirit). Boat and barge gloss has been used for many narrowboat restorations, which can be seen on waterways around the UK.

Surface Condition: Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free from any dust, oil, grease, and salt contamination.
Bare Steel: Metal must be free from rust and scale. Prime with a high-quality anti-corrosive primer, such as Palatine Marine Anti-Corrosive Metal Primer, before applying the gloss.
Bare Wood: Ensure the wood is dry and clean. Apply a suitable wood primer/sealer followed by Palatine High Build Marine Undercoat to provide a smooth base.
Previously Painted Surfaces: Existing coatings must be sound and well-adhered. Lightly abrade (sand) the surface with fine abrasive paper to create a “key” for the new paint. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water and allow to dry completely.
Undercoating: For the best depth of colour and a high-mirror finish, it is highly recommended to apply Palatine High Build Marine Undercoat in a coordinating shade before the final gloss coats.
Testing: Always carry out a test patch (approx. 100mm x 100mm) to check for compatibility with the substrate or previous coatings and to confirm the colour.
Mixing: Stir the paint thoroughly for approximately 2 minutes before use. A drill stirrer or a wooden batten at least 25mm wide is recommended to ensure pigments are fully dispersed.
Methods: Apply using a high-quality natural bristle brush or a short-pile solvent-resistant roller.
Thinning:
* Brush/Roller: Usually applied at full strength. If required in very cold conditions, thin by no more than 5% with Palatine White Spirit.
* Spray Application: Dilute by approximately 10% by volume with Palatine White Spirit for airless or conventional spray.
Technique: Apply in thin, even coats. To achieve a professional “yacht” finish, “lay off” the paint with a brush immediately after rolling to remove any orange-peel texture or bubbles.
Coating System: Two coats are recommended for maximum durability and gloss retention.
Conditions: For best results, apply in warm (minimum 10°C) and dry conditions. Avoid painting in direct strong sunlight or if the temperature is likely to drop below 10°C (or if the dew point is reached) during application and drying.
Please note: The colours on the product listings are only given as a guide. This is due to the fact that every computer monitor has a different capability to display colours. In addition, everyone sees these colours differently. Sample pots are available to order upon request. Always carry out a test patch (approximately 100x100mm) before full application to ensure compatibility with previous coatings and the substrate, and to ensure the colour achieved meets your requirements. Failure to do so will result in a product refund claim not being accepted.
