A wet film comb that allows the wet film thickness of paint to be checked during the painting process. Using the gauge, you can ensure you are applying the paint at the required thickness to achieve the full durability of the paint.
To use the gauge, simply insert the gauge into the wet paint at a right angle to the surface. When lifted out, the last coated tooth is the wet film thickness of the coating. If all teeth on the side used are coated, check again with the next side anti clockwise.
This gauge is useful when applying intumescent paints, where a specific wet film thickness is required for the coating to function as intended. It is also commonly used when applying two pack paints to ensure the correct thickness of the primer and topcoat.
Preparation:
To ensure a durable and effective bilge paint application, it’s crucial to properly prepare the surface. Start by cleaning the substrate thoroughly to remove any dirt, grease, or oil. You can use a degreaser or mineral spirits for this step. Next, inspect the surface for any rust or old paint. If present, remove the rust using a wire brush, sandpaper, grinder or suitable rust remover / treatment. For old paint, use a paint stripper or sand it down until you reach the bare metal. Once the surface is clean and free of rust and old paint, sand it with fine-grit sandpaper to create a smooth and slightly roughened surface for better paint adhesion. Finally, wipe down the steel with a clean cloth to remove any dust or debris before applying our rust-inhibitive marine primer. After the primer has dried, you can proceed with applying our high build marine undercoat and then one but preferably two coats of the bilge paint.
Application:
Best results are obtained in warm (minimum 10°C), dry conditions.
Mix thoroughly for approximately 2 minutes using a drill stirrer. A wooden batten at least 25mm wide is also ideal.
Apply an even coat using a brush, short to medium pile roller on smooth surfaces.
For spray application by either airless or conventional spray a dilution ration of no more than 10% is recommended with Palatine White Spirit by volume.
A second coat can be applied at full strength. This will prolong the life and performance of the coating.
For application onto wooden surfaces, a minimum of two coats is recommended.
Drying Time @ 20ºC: Drying times will be extended at low temperatures.
Do not apply when ambient temperature falls below 5ºC or relative humidity exceeds 90%.
Surface dry @ 20ºC: 1 hours
Hard dry @ 20ºC: 4 hours
Overcoat@ 20ºC: After 8 hours (temperature dependent).
Theoretical Coverage: 12 – 14m² per litre.
(Coverage rate can be affected by such variables as type and condition of substrate, type of application equipment and individual method of application.)
Storage: Store in temperature range 5-40ºC
Thinners: White Spirit
