Product Description

Polyurethane Wood Floor Varnish Colours is a polyurethane based varnish for interior wood floors. It protects the floor form the wear and damage caused by everyday use, such as scratches, scuffs and spills. The floor varnish also provides a decorative finish to the floor with a translucent coloured finish, with colours including light oak, dark oak and antique pine.

With the range of wood colours we have available, you can match to your existing floor colour, or change the look of the wood without having to replace the flooring. This varnish is an ideal choice for revitalising tired floors with a choice of colour.

Suitable for a range of applications, including:

  • Hardwood Floors: Ideal for use on all types of hardwood flooring, providing a durable protective layer enhancing the wood’s natural grain.
  • Floorboard Varnish: Perfect for floorboards, offering a tough, durable finish that protects against knocks, scratches, and spillages. The quick-drying, translucent formula brings out the natural grain of your floorboards, ensuring they look beautiful for years to come.

In addition to the 13 standard wood floor varnish colours we offer on this page, we are able to produce this varnish in many other colours, including blues, greens and purples. If you would like more information about these colours, please contact us.

At Palatine Paints, we manufacture our own range of paints and varnishes instead of sourcing them from an external supplier. This means we have complete knowledge of our products and can answer any questions you may have.

If you have any queries regarding surfaces, previous coatings, application or anything else, please get in touch with our team. We are available on our web chat service or by phone during our opening hours, and can also be contacted by email with any questions you may have.

If you’re looking for a clear finish floor varnish, please see our Polyurethane Floor Varnish Clear. For a solid colour wooden floor paint, we also have a floor paint for wood, available in a range of different colours, as well as an anti-slip option.

Please note: The colours on the product listings are only given as a guide. This is due to the fact that every computer monitor has a different capability to display colours. In addition, everyone sees these colours differently.

Important Application Note on Colour Opacity
When using tinted versions of our Polyurethane Floor Varnish, please be aware that some colours may contain a higher volume of titanium white pigment. Titanium white is a powerful opacifier, which can increase the opacity and coverage of the varnish.

To ensure a smooth and even finish, we recommend the following: Dilute the varnish with white spirit by 10%, up to a maximum of 20% before application.
Apply in thin, even coats, allowing each coat to dry thoroughly before applying the next.
Building up the finish gradually will help avoid brush marks and ensure a more professional, durable result.
This approach is especially important when working with lighter or pastel shades, where pigment concentration can be higher.

Preparation

Surface Condition: Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from dust, oil, grease, wax, and old loose coatings. The moisture content of wood should ideally be below 18%.

Bare Wood: To seal the surface and ensure optimal adhesion, thin the first coat with up to 10% Palatine White Spirit.

Previously Varnished/Painted Floors: Ensure the existing coating is sound. Lightly sand (abrade) the surface with a fine abrasive paper to create a “key” for the new varnish to bond to.

Concrete/Stone: Ensure concrete is fully matured. Remove any “laitance” (dusty surface residue) using an acid etch if the surface is very smooth. For optimum performance on these surfaces, use Palatine Pliocem Concrete Sealer as a base.

Application

Mixing: Stir thoroughly for approximately 2 minutes before use. Use a drill stirrer or a wooden batten at least 25mm wide.

Methods: Apply using a brush, short-to-medium pile solvent-resistant roller, or spray.

Coating System:
* A minimum of 2 coats is recommended for bare wood.
* Apply the first coat (thinned if on bare wood).
* Apply subsequent coats at full strength.

Spray Application: If using airless or conventional spray, you can dilute by no more than 10% with Palatine White Spirit.

Conditions: Apply in warm (minimum 10°C), dry conditions. Avoid application if the temperature is likely to fall below 10°C during the application period.

Safety: This is a solvent-based, flammable product. Ensure the area is well-ventilated during and after application. Wear appropriate PPE (gloves and eye protection) and avoid breathing vapours.
