Preparation

Surface Condition: Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free from loose or flaking material, dust, grease, and millscale.

Previously Painted Surfaces: Rub down previously gloss-painted surfaces with fine waterproof abrasive paper and rinse thoroughly to provide a “key” for the new coating.

Priming: For a superior finish, it is recommended to prime surfaces with Palatine All Purpose Primer/Undercoat before applying the wood paint.

Environmental Conditions: Best results are achieved in warm (minimum 10°C) and dry conditions. Do not apply when the temperature falls below 10°C.

Crucial Airflow: This oil-based paint cures through oxidation. High airflow and ventilation are essential to prevent the paint from remaining tacky. Ensure windows and doors are open to allow solvent vapours to escape and fresh air to enter.

Avoid Direct Heat: Do not use space heaters directly on the wet paint, as this can cause the surface to “skin over” and wrinkle (shrivel) while the paint underneath remains wet.

Application

Mixing: Stir thoroughly for approximately 2 minutes using a drill stirrer or a wooden batten at least 25mm wide.

Methods:
* Brush: Apply an even coat using high-quality brushes.
* Roller: Use a short-to-medium pile roller for smooth surfaces or a long pile roller for textured surfaces.
* Spray: For airless or conventional spray, a dilution ratio of no more than 10% is recommended using Palatine White Spirit. Apply thin coats.

Coats: Once the first coat is dry, a second coat can be applied at full strength to prolong the life and performance of the coating.

Colours Available: 26 Standard, BS 381C, BS4800 and Ral Classic range.

Pack Sizes: 500ml, 1 Litre, 2.5 Litre, 5 Litre.

Coverage / Drying Times

(Based on standard conditions of 20°C)

Surface Dry: 3 hours

Hard Dry: 8 hours

Overcoat: after 24 hours. Keep coated areas dry for a minimum of 24 hours following application. Please note, drying times will be extended at low temperatures. Do not apply when ambient temperature falls below 10ºC

Theoretical Coverage: 12 – 14m² per litre.

(Coverage rate can be affected by such variables as type and condition of substrate, type of application equipment and individual method of application.)

Thinning and Cleaning

Thinning: Use Palatine White Spirit (Max 10% for spray application).

Cleaning: Clean all equipment immediately after use with Palatine White Spirit.

If using more than one batch of the same colour, intermix before use. For best results, it is recommended to ensure high airflow during the curing process to prevent the paint from remaining tacky.

Q: What is Profinish Wood Paint?
A: This is a durable, oil-based internal topcoat designed specifically for indoor woodwork. It provides a protective and decorative finish for high-use surfaces like doors and skirting boards.

Q: What should I use for cleanup?
A: Because this is an oil-based paint, you must use Palatine White Spirit to clean your brushes, rollers, and equipment.

Q: The room is warm, so why is the paint still tacky after 5 hours?
A: Temperature is only half the battle. Oil-based paints cure via oxidation (reacting with oxygen). In a freshly painted room with the door and windows shut, the air becomes saturated with solvent vapors, which actually “stalls” the drying process. You need a cross-breeze (fresh air in, vapor-filled air out) for the paint to harden correctly.

Q: Can I speed up the drying time with a heater?
A: Use caution. While a bit of warmth helps, a direct space heater pointed at the wood can cause the surface to “skin over” while the paint underneath stays wet. This leads to “shrivelling” or wrinkling of the paint. It is better to have a cool room with high airflow than a hot room with stagnant air.
