Product Description

Our Multi Purpose Universal Gloss Paint is an alkyd gloss coating. It provides a durable finish to almost any prepared surface, including wood, metal, plastic, uPVC, MDF and tiles. It features increased adhesion strength to allow application on materials that are otherwise difficult to paint. This is a solvent based alternative to the many water based multi surface paints available.

Universal Gloss provides a long lasting and weather resistant finish, making it ideal for use in outdoor environments as well as indoor surfaces. The solvent based nature of the paint also allows it to overcoat most existing paints or coatings that may be on a surface.

Palatine Paints is a manufacturer of paints rather than simply a supplier. Because of this, we are able to provide in depth technical information on our Universal Gloss, as well as our extensive range of other coatings and paints.

We can recommend a suitable primer for the surface you are painting, check compatibility with surfaces and other types of coating, or calculate the quantity of paint you will require. If you have a query, you can contact us through web chat, phone or email and we will help you as efficiently as possible.

As a manufacturer, we are also able to provide custom colours in most of our products, including our Universal Gloss. We are able to match to RAL Classic, British Standard 4800 and 381C, and NCS 2050. If you are not sure which colour will match an existing object, surface or paint, you can bring a sample to our shop, where we can help you find the perfect match.

For a multi surface primer suitable for most surface types, see Coo-Var Prime All.

Multi Purpose Universal Gloss Paint Application

Preparation: On previously painted surfaces, ensure it is sound and non-flaking. Abrade the surface preferably by mechanical abrasion to provide a “key” and maximise adhesion of the subsequent coating. For metal surfaces the standard grades of cleanliness for abrasive blast cleaning in accordance with BS EN ISO 8501-1[1] are:

  • Sa 1 – Light blast cleaning
  • Sa 2 – Thorough blast cleaning
  • Sa 2½ – Very thorough blast cleaning
  • Sa 3 – Blast cleaning to visually clean steel

Mixing: Stir the paint with a drill stirrer or wooden baton at least 2” wide. Continue to stir during application to avoid thickening of the product.

Application: Apply by brush, roller or spray and work well into the surface. Avoid applying the paint to thickly to avoid delaying drying times. The second and subsequent coats can be applied as soon as the first / preceding coat is dry usually after 12-24 hours, and should be applied within 5 days.

If more than 5 days elapse, the first coat should be lightly abraded before the second coat is applied. Avoid power washing the surface for 7 days.

Universal Gloss Multi Purpose Paint is touch dry in 3 hours and hard dry in 24 hours. Once applied, leave for 16 hours before overcoating.

Expected Coverage: 12 to 14m² per litre

For thinning and cleaning, use white spirit.

Preparation

Surface Condition: Ensure all surfaces are sound, clean, dry, and free from dust, oil, grease, and any other surface contaminants.

Suitability: This is a versatile, high-gloss solvent-borne coating suitable for use on wood, metal, and most masonry surfaces.

Metal Surfaces: For bare ferrous metals (iron and steel), it is recommended to apply a suitable anti-corrosive primer first to ensure long-term protection.

Non-Ferrous Metals: For surfaces like aluminium or galvanised steel, use a suitable etching primer or Mordant Solution before application.

Previously Painted Surfaces: Ensure existing paint is sound and non-flaking. Lightly sand (abrade) previously glossed surfaces to create a “key” for the new paint to adhere to. Rinse and allow to dry thoroughly.

Testing: Always carry out a test patch (approximately 100mm x 100mm) before full application to check for compatibility with the substrate or previous coatings and to ensure the colour is correct.

Application

Mixing: Stir thoroughly for approximately 2 minutes before use. A drill stirrer or a wooden batten at least 25mm wide is recommended to ensure the paint is fully blended.

Methods: Apply an even coat using a brush or roller.

Spray Application: If using airless or conventional spray, the product can be diluted by no more than 10% by volume with Palatine White Spirit.

Coating System: Apply the first coat evenly. Once dry, a second coat can be applied at full strength to enhance durability and the depth of the gloss finish.

Conditions: For best results, apply in warm (minimum 10°C) and dry conditions. Avoid application if the temperature is likely to fall below 10°C during the drying period.

Colours Available: Anthracite Grey, Black, Magnolia, White, Heritage Green, and custom tints to RAL Classic, BS 4800, and BS 381C ranges.

Pack Sizes: 1 Litre, 2.5 Litre, 5 Litre.
