Please allow 1-2 working days for next day delivery of 20L items. This is due to the operation times of the hazardous goods vehicles of the external couriers.
£10.65 – £44.10Price range: £10.65 through £44.10
Protect and preserve your outdoor timber with Barrettine CreoSolve – the next-generation creosote substitute. Designed for those who want the traditional look and performance of creosote without the associated health risks, CreoSolve is a low-odour, oil-based treatment that penetrates deeply into wood, repelling water and helping prevent cracking, swelling, and warping.
Formulated without biocides or carcinogenic warnings, CreoSolve is ideal for treating rough, sawn, or smooth timber used in fencing, sheds, and other exterior structures. Its bitumen and wax-enriched formula ensures long-lasting protection and a rich, traditional brown finish
Ideal for use on garden fences, timber sheds, fence posts, agricultural fencing, and outdoor wooden structures (excluding decking and furniture)
Creosolve Creosote Substitute is available in Light Brown and Dark Brown in 4L and 20L sizes. Barrettine Creocote was a previous creosote substitute and this has now been superseded by Barrettine Creosolve.
Because of ongoing safety regulations, in October 2020 an additional H351 safety hazard warning “Suspected of causing cancer” had to be included with the Creocote product. This is because of a small level of diesel content in the product (which in fact poses little more risk than filling a car fuel tank).
Barrettine CreoSolve® is a lower hazard alternative to traditional Creosote and some other Creosote replacement wood treatments. Similar physical/water repellence/application characteristics of traditional Creosote but contains no biocide.

Test First – Always test on a small, inconspicuous area to check for compatibility and desired finish.
Ensure compatibility with previous coatings—remove opaque paints or varnishes.
Surface Preparation
Remove old coatings: Sand, use a heat gun, or apply a paint stripper like Barrettine Paint Panther or Peelaway.
Clean weathered wood: Use Barrettine Wood Reviver to restore natural colour and remove surface mould.
Remove decayed wood: Replace damaged areas and treat with Barrettine Universal Preserver.
Acclimatise new wood: Let wood settle in place—24 hours indoors, up to 6 weeks outdoors.
Remove resin: Scrape off resinous deposits and wipe with white spirit or methylated spirits.
Fill gaps: Use compatible wood filler (avoid wax-based fillers).
Sand the surface: Start with coarse grit and finish with fine grit or wire wool. Avoid steel wool on hardwoods like oak.
Clean and treat: Wash with Barrettine Mould and Mildew Cleaner and let dry for 24 hours.
Preserve untreated wood: Apply Barrettine Universal Preserver to protect against rot and insects.
Application
Before You Begin
Shake or stir well before and during use.
Mix multiple containers together for colour consistency.
Ensure good ventilation—apply outdoors or in well-ventilated areas.
Environmental Conditions
Wood moisture content must be below 20% (use a moisture meter).
Apply in temperatures between 5–30°C.
Avoid application if rain is expected within 24 hours.
Relative humidity should be below 80% (ideally under 60%).
