Product Description

Black bitumen paint (solvent-based) for exterior protection

Palatine Black Bitumen Paint is a solvent-based protective coating designed to help waterproof and protect exterior surfaces. It forms a tough, water-resistant barrier for outdoor metalwork, timber and masonry where long-lasting protection is needed.

Where to use it

  • Metal: gates, railings, steelwork and general exterior metal protection
  • Wood: fences, posts and outdoor timber
  • Masonry: brickwork and concrete (exterior)
  • Roofing and general weatherproofing applications (where bitumen coatings are suitable)

Key benefits

  • Tough, water-resistant finish for outdoor protection
  • Helps protect against weathering on exposed surfaces
  • Good adhesion to properly prepared substrates
  • Easy to apply by brush (and suitable methods as required)

How to apply (quick guide)

  1. Ensure the surface is clean, dry and sound. Remove dirt, grease and loose or flaking coatings.
  2. For metal, remove rust and loose paint; key smooth surfaces for better adhesion.
  3. Stir thoroughly. Apply an even coat and allow to dry fully before a second coat (if required).
  4. Apply in dry conditions and allow adequate drying time before exposure to rain.

Important restrictions

  • External use only (not suitable for internal use).
  • Not for potable water tanks or any surface in contact with drinking water.
  • Not suitable for plastics.

Black bitumen, also known as asphalt or tar, is commonly used for corrosion protection in various applications, further information for corrosion protection for black bitumen and the coating thickness required to achieve the specific corrosion rating can be found on the Technical Information tab.

Preparation

Clean the Surface: Ensure the surface is free from dust, oil, grease, and any loose or flaking material. This ensures proper adhesion and a durable coating.

Metal Surfaces: It is essential to remove any rust or corrosion before applying the paint.

Roofing & Gutters: Ensure all joints and seams are well-prepared to be thoroughly coated for effective waterproofing.

Sub-Ground Structures: Suitable for protecting foundations and retaining walls below ground level from moisture.

Safety Note: Do not use on surfaces in direct contact with drinking water or aquatic life (e.g., ponds or water tanks).

Application

Mix thoroughly for approximately 2 minutes using a drill stirrer. A wooden batten at least 25mm wide is also ideal

Methods:
* Brush: Ideal for smaller areas or detailed work.
* Roller or Spray Gun: More efficient for larger surfaces.

Spray Gun Technique: When spraying, maintain a consistent distance from the surface and apply evenly to avoid drips or patchy coverage.

Number of Coats: A minimum of two coats is recommended, especially when used as a finish coat or on wooden surfaces, to ensure maximum protection.

Consistency: One user noted the consistency is “treacle-like,” making it a bit more time-consuming to apply but highly effective at repelling water once dry.

Protective Gear: It is advised to wear old clothes, gloves, eye protection, and a mask during application.

Colours Available: Black ( A Green Bitumen alternative is also available).

Pack Sizes: 1 Litre, 2.5 Litre, 5 Litre, 25 Litre, and 200 Litre.

Coverage / Drying Times:

(Based on standard conditions of 20°C)

Surface Dry: 2 – 5 hours. Drying time will vary according to temperature and humidity e.g. the drying times quoted will be
significantly longer in cold, damp conditions.

Hard Dry:24 hours (Full chemical and water resistance is reached after the coating has fully cured).

Overcoat: After 24 hours (Ensure the first coat is fully dry before applying the second).

Theoretical Coverage: 7 – 10m² per litre. It is recommended to apply 2 coats.

(Coverage rate can be affected by such variables as type and condition of substrate, type of application equipment and individual method of application.)

Thinning and Cleaning

Thinning: This product is supplied ready for use. If thinning is required for certain application methods, use 5-10% Palatine White Spirit.

Cleaning: Clean all tools and equipment immediately after use with Palatine White Spirit.

If using more than one batch of the same colour, intermix before use.

Corrosion Category Protection for Black Bitumen

C1 (Very low) & C2 (Low)
Coating thickness (dry film thickness, dft) = 100 microns
To achieve that apply 2 coats at below application rates:

Porous surfaces (e.g. concrete): 4–6m2/litre/coat
Non-porous surfaces (e.g. steel): 10-12m2/litre/coat

C3 (Medium)
2 coats to get a 200 micron dft as per below.

Porous surfaces (e.g. concrete): 2–3m2/litre/coat
Non-porous surfaces (e.g. steel): 5-6m2/litre/coat

C4 (High)
2 coats to get a 400 micron dft as per below.

Porous surfaces (e.g. concrete): 1–1.5m2/litre/coat
Non-porous surfaces (e.g. steel): 2.5-3m2/litre/coat

  3. steve gregory (verified owner)

good to apply goes on well good coverage dried to a non sticky dry finish
pleased with the product, too soon to say if it lasts well or not
    would buy again

  4. Paula (verified owner)

Great paint, will buy again. Always very long lasting

  5. ABK (verified owner)

Ordered a 5L tin. Delivery was very fast and the product is excellent.

I applied one coat to one side of 8 off 6′ X 6′ fence panels and still have some left in the tin. The colour is great and I will be ordering more to complete the project. It’s time consuming to apply as the consistency is treacle like. The following day the overnight rain was sat on the fence panels and had not penetrated the wood. I have 100% confidence it will protect the wood and look great.

I wore old cloths, gloves, eye protection and a mask when applying this product as its pretty strong stuff. Plenty of ventilation required when applying.

I have no hesitation in recommending this excellent product.
