Product Description

Barrettine wood protective treatment is Oil/solvent based for deeper penetration of outdoor wood. Low odour ready to use formulation. Superb quality water repellent resins. UV fade resistant colour pigments. High level, long lasting protection. Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment is a high quality timber sealer. Therefore, it’s designed specifically for wood that’s already pressure treated. This formula focuses on wood nourishment and surface protection. It provides excellent water repellency to keep your garden structures looking new

Is this a Wood Preserver?

No. This product is a non-biocidal treatment. It does not contain the heavy chemicals found in full wood preservers. Instead, it uses high grade resins to seal the surface. This makes it a safer, eco-friendlier choice for refreshing existing fences and sheds.

Key Benefits

  • Water Repellent: Stops moisture from soaking into the timber.

  • Nourishing Formula: Prevents wood from drying out or cracking.

  • Eco Friendly: Contains no biocides or wood rot chemicals.

  • UV Resistant: Helps prevent the sun from fading your wood colour

  • For unpreserved / untreated timber we recommend priming with Barrettine Universal Preserver

Moreover, the translucent finish of Barrettine wood treatment allows visibility of the natural grain whilst providing colour for effect. Additionally, it’s available in clear. In fact, seven colours are available including the popular golden brown wood treatment. See the swatch below.(Not ideal for decking or garden furniture structures as rub resistance may not be sufficient).

The colour swatches are an indication only and representative of the product applied to clean new/pale timber and rough sawn pine (2 coats). The final colour finish can vary considerably due to the age, type & condition of the timber being treated and will darken with multiple coats. Viewing colours on multiple digital screens can vary considerably and may not be totally accurate. We always recommend carrying out a small inconspicuous test area first. It is the Customer/end users responsibility to satisfy themselves that the colour finish is correct before full application.

Smooth Pine (2 coats)

Rough Pine (2 coats)

Preparation
Clean the surface: Ensure the wood is dry and free from dirt, algae, and lichen. We recommend using Barrettine Mould & Mildew Cleaner to clear any biological growth.
Check existing coatings: This treatment is for unsealed wood. You must completely remove any old paint or varnish by stripping or sanding.
Dryness is key: Timber should be dry for at least 24 hours before you begin. Do not apply if rain is forecast within the next 48 hours.
Test first: Always perform a test patch on a small, hidden area. This ensures you are happy with the final colour and absorption.

Application Method
Shake well: Stir or shake the container thoroughly before and during use. This keeps the colour pigments even.
Tools: Apply using a high-quality brush, roller, or a solvent-compatible low-pressure sprayer.
Technique: Apply a thin, even layer following the direction of the wood grain.
End Grains: Pay extra attention to cut end-grains. Saturate these areas thoroughly, as they absorb moisture most easily.

Number of Coats
Standard Protection: Apply a minimum of 2 coats.
Enhanced Results: A third coat will provide a deeper colour and a slight satin sheen. It also increases water repellency.
Note: Planed (smooth) timber may require more coats than rough-sawn wood to achieve the same colour depth.

Drying Times
Touch Dry: Typically dry in 6–12 hours under normal conditions (20°C).
Between Coats: Allow at least 6 hours before applying the next coat.
Full Cure: It takes 24–48 hours for the treatment to reach maximum water repellency.

Maintenance & Clean Up
Clean tools: Wash brushes and sprayers immediately with Palatine White Spirit or Brush Cleaner.
Aftercare: Re-apply a fresh coat at the first sign of weathering. This is usually required every 1–2 years depending on exposure.

Q: What is the difference between Wood Protective Treatment and a Wood Preserver?
A: A wood preserver contains biocides to kill and prevent rot. This Wood Protective Treatment is a non-biocidal sealer. It is designed to nourish the wood and provide high water repellency. Use this for timber that is already pressure-treated.

Q: Can I use this on a brand-new, untreated shed?
A: For new, bare timber, we recommend applying Barrettine Wood Preserver first. This provides the chemical protection needed against decay. Once dry, you can apply the Protective Treatment as a decorative, water-shedding topcoat.

Q: Is this product safe for garden plants and pets?
A: Yes. Because it does not contain biocides, it is safe for use around plants and pets once it has fully dried. This makes it a popular choice for pet housing and garden planters.

Q: Does it protect against fading from the sun?
A: Yes. The formula contains pigments and resins that offer UV protection. This helps to slow down the natural “greying” process of timber caused by sunlight.

Q: How often should I re-apply the treatment?
A: For the best protection, we recommend a maintenance coat every 1–2 years. You can test the wood by splashing a little water on it; if the water no longer “beads” on the surface, it is time for a fresh coat.

Q: Is this a water-based or solvent-based product?
A: This is a solvent-based treatment. This allows it to penetrate deeply into the wood grain compared to water-based alternatives, providing a more durable barrier against moisture.

Q: Can I paint over the Wood Protective Treatment?
A: No. This product contains wax and resins designed to repel liquids. Paint will not adhere to the surface. If you intend to paint your wood, use the Barrettine Universal Wood Preserver instead.

Great product swift delivery and well packaged

  3. Enid Smart (verified owner)

    Excellent product highly recommend

  4. Brian Hall (verified owner)

Barrettine’s Wood Protective Treatment is an excellent product that seems to have better penetration on dried out, sun-bleached wood (that I have neglected longer than I should) than the more expensive Premium Wood Preservative that I have previously used, although its colour is less golden and rather darker. It is very easy to apply and has good coverage. and I have found that it gives good protection for at least 2 years.

I must also commend Palatine Paints for their excellent personal telephone service. Calls answered immediately, then put through to one of a team of very friendly people who go out of their way to be helpful.

  5. Andrew Dudman (verified owner)

Easier to apply than water based treatments and has better penetration. Recommended.
