The colour swatches are an indication only and representative of the product applied to clean new/pale timber and rough sawn pine (2 coats). The final colour finish can vary considerably due to the age, type & condition of the timber being treated and will darken with multiple coats. Viewing colours on multiple digital screens can vary considerably and may not be totally accurate. We always recommend carrying out a small inconspicuous test area first. It is the Customer/end users responsibility to satisfy themselves that the colour finish is correct before full application.

Barrettine Wood Preserver is a high-quality, wax-containing treatment designed to provide a complete all-in-one finish for bare and untreated exterior timber. Ideal for use on rough or smooth outdoor woodwork such as garden sheds, fences, trellis work, and gazebos

What is Barrettine Wood Preserver?

Barrettine Premier Wood Preserver is an oil/spirit-based, deep-penetrating wood preservative designed to help preserve timber and provide long-lasting protection. It’s available in clear or UV fade-resistant colour shades, with a semi-transparent finish that shows the wood texture.

Where can I use it?

  • Fence and fence post preservation: Essential for protecting wood in ground contact or high-moisture areas
  • Garden furniture and decking: Adds a decorative, water-repellent finish to exterior timber
  • General exterior woodwork: Suitable for both softwood and hardwood applications
  • Shed and garden building protection: Provides a deep-penetrating barrier against decay
  • Versatile finishing: Available in both clear and a variety of wood-stain colours
  • Window frames and gates
  • External doors and door frames (including internal/external sections)
  • Structural timbers in unoccupied areas (e.g., floor joists)
  • Animal housing (e.g., chicken coops, stables, kennels) — keep animals away until fully dry
  • Note: Not recommended for use on internal living areas or surfaces in contact with food/drink.
  • No topcoat required, standalone decorative finish

While Barrettine premier wood preserver is available in seven UV fade resistant colours, it can also be overcoated for aesthetic purposes or for added protection, with suitable paints and wood oils.

NOTE: Before overcoating, allow the wood to fully ‘weather’ after applying the preservative. This is especially important for water based paints as the wax contained in the preserver will repel the water and prevent adherence of the paint. The ‘weathering’ process can take several months.

If you are looking to refresh previously treated wood, take a look at Barrettine’s wood protective treatment.

How to apply
Prep: Ensure the wood is dry and free from dirt and any repellent coatings (e.g., paint/varnish). Remove coatings and sand as required.

Optional pre-clean: Use a biocidal wash (e.g., Barrettine Knockout Mould and Mildew) before treatment.

Application methods: Brush, dip, roller, or airless spray (minimum 1mm flat fan tip nozzle, 9–11 thou tip). Not suitable for a pump-action garden sprayer.

Coats: Best results typically with 2–3 coats.
Overcoating note: If overcoating (especially with water-based paints), allow the wood to fully “weather” after preserving — this can take several months due to wax content repelling water-based coatings.

Drying/recoat: 12 hours under normal conditions (20°C / 65% RH).

Clean equipment with Palatine White Spirit.

Always read the label. Use biocides safely.
Contains Permethrin, Tebuconazole & IPBC.
Protects uncontaminated timber against wet rot, decay and wood boring insect attack.
Mainly for external applications but some Internal. (refer to internal and external information on the back of the tin/container).
Approved under COPR/BPR
Harmless to plants and pets when dry.

Q: What is wood preserver used for?
A: It is a trusted, long-established wood preservative used to protect outdoor sheds, fences, garden furniture, and general exterior woodwork against wet rot, wood-discolouring fungi, and wood-boring insects

Q: Is it suitable for exterior timber?
A: Yes, this formula is specifically engineered for exterior use. It contains high quality waxes and resins that provide excellent water repellency for garden sheds, fences, and other outdoor structures.

Q: How many coats do I need?
A: For maximum protection and the best finish, you should apply 2–3 thin coats. Always follow the direction of the grain for even penetration

Q: How long does it take to dry?
A: The product is typically touch-dry in 6–12 hours. We recommend allowing a full 24 hours between coats and before applying any decorative topcoats (where applicable) to ensure it has fully settled

Q: Can I paint over it?
A: Generally, no. Because this specific product contains high levels of wax for water repellency, most paints and stains will not adhere to it. If you plan to paint or varnish over the treatment, use Barrettine Universal Wood Preserver instead.

Q: Is it safe for treated timber?
A: Yes, it is perfectly safe to use on previously pressure-treated (tanalised) timber. It helps refresh the colour and adds a vital extra layer of moisture protection.

Q: Do you deliver quickly?
A: At Palatine Paints, we prioritize rapid dispatch for all Barrettine products to ensure your timber protection project can start without delay.

Q: How long does Barrettine Wood Preserver last?
A: You can expect the protection to last between 2–5 years depending on the level of weather exposure and the condition of the timber

Q: What’s the difference between preserver and protector treatment?
A: The main difference is the active ingredients: the Wood Preserver is a biocidal product that kills and prevents rot and insects. The Wood Protective Treatment is a non-biocidal sealer designed for water repellency on timber that is already pressure-treated

Q: Is it a creosote alternative?
A: It is a separate, modern wood preservative product and should not be considered a direct replacement for traditional creosote.

Q: What size should I buy?
A: We offer 1L for small projects, 5L for typical garden sheds or fences, and 25L for trade, contractors, or bulk requirements
