Product Description

Barrettine Universal Wood Preserver is a high-performance, wax-free wood primer. It is designed for bare timber that requires protection before being over-coated. This over-paintable wood preservative defends against wet rot, decay, and wood-boring insects. It creates a perfect base for paints, stains, or varnishes.

Why Choose a Paintable Wood Sealer?

Standard preservatives often contain water-repellent waxes. These waxes can prevent paint from sticking to the wood. This Universal formula is 100% wax-free. It acts as an essential paintable wood sealer for your garden projects. Your chosen topcoat will bond perfectly to the wood fibres. Meanwhile, the preservative works underneath to stop rot.

Key Features & Compatibility

  • Over Paintable: Specifically engineered to be compatible with most water-based and solvent-based paints and stains.

  • Deep Penetration: Soaks into the wood grain to protect structural timbers, roof joists, and floorboards.

  • Base Coat Protection: Acts as the perfect foundation for Barrettine Log Cabin Treatment or opaque exterior paints such as Shed & Fence or Palatine Log Cabin .

  • Clear Finish: Available in clear only to ensure it does not bleed through or alter the final colour of your topcoat.

How to Apply: Barrettine Universal Wood Preserver
Preparation
Clean the Surface: Ensure the timber is structurally sound, dry, and free from dirt, dust, algae, or lichen.

Strip Old Finishes: As a penetrating paintable wood sealer, the product must reach the bare wood fibers. Completely remove any existing paint, varnish, or wax-based treatments.

Mould Treatment: If the wood shows signs of black spots or mould, treat it first with Barrettine Mould and Mildew Cleaner, as this preserver is a preventative treatment and will not kill existing spores.

Application Method
Application Tools: Apply using a high-quality brush, roller, or by dipping. It is also suitable for low-pressure sprayers.

Technique: Apply evenly along the grain. Ensure you saturate the end grain (the cut ends of the timber) as these areas are most prone to water absorption and rot.

Internal vs External: If using on internal structural timbers (joists/rafters), no topcoat is required. For all external applications, a secondary topcoat is essential.

Number of Coats
Recommended: Apply 2 to 3 coats to ensure maximum protection against rot and wood-boring insects.

Drying & Over-Painting
Touch Dry: Typically 6–12 hours depending on ambient temperature and humidity.

Wait for Topcoat: As an over-paintable wood preservative, you must allow the product to dry for at least 24 hours before applying your chosen paint, stain, or varnish.

Test Patch: Always perform a small test patch with your topcoat to confirm final compatibility and adhesion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Barrettine Universal Wood Preserver used for?

It is a wax-free primer used to protect bare timber against wet rot, decay, and wood-boring insects. It is specifically designed for surfaces that will be finished with a topcoat like paint, varnish, or stain.

Is it suitable for exterior timber?

Yes, it is excellent for exterior use; however, because it is wax-free, it must be over-coated with a weatherproof paint, stain, or oil if exposed to the elements to provide moisture protection.

Can I paint over this wood preserver?

Yes. This is a specialized over-paintable wood preservative. Unlike the standard version, it contains no wax, ensuring that paints, stains, and varnishes adhere perfectly to the treated surface.

How many coats do I need?

For full protection, we recommend applying 2–3 coats. Ensure the wood is thoroughly saturated, particularly on the end grains where moisture ingress is most likely.

How long does it take to dry before I can paint?

The preserver is usually touch-dry in 6–12 hours. However, as a paintable wood sealer, you should allow a full 24 hours for the treatment to settle before applying your decorative topcoat.

Is it safe for use on pressure-treated (tanalised) timber?

Absolutely. It can be used on pre-treated wood to provide an extra layer of protection against rot and insects, especially on areas where the wood has been cut, notched, or drilled.

Does this product kill existing woodworm?

No. This is a preventative treatment designed to stop infestations from starting. If you have an active woodworm problem, you should use a dedicated woodworm killer before applying this primer.

What is the difference between Universal and standard Wood Preserver?

The standard Wood Preserver is an all-in-one decorative finish that contains wax for water repellency. The Universal version is a wax-free primer specifically made to be over-painted.

Can I use this on internal joists?

Yes. It is ideal for internal structural timbers like floor or roof joists. In these protected internal environments, a secondary decorative topcoat is not required.

Spoke to Palatine Paints before ordering and they were easy to get hold of. The person I spoke to was able to answer my questions quickly and with confidence. The product arrived quickly and in good condition. Also, they are the best value option from seven different firms that I contacted.
