Properties of Acetone:
Physical properties – Also known as propanone, a colourless, volatile liquid with a distinctive sweet odour with a molecular formula of C3H6O. Acetone is a liquid at room temperature (25°C) and standard atmospheric pressure (1 atm). It boils at 56.05°C and freezes at -94.7°C. Acetone is miscible with water, meaning it can dissolve in water in all proportions. This property makes it a useful solvent for many organic compounds. It is also soluble in many organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, and chloroform. Acetone is highly flammable. Its flash point is -20°C, and its autoignition temperature is approximately 465°C.
Chemical properties – Acetone readily undergoes oxidation in the presence of oxygen or oxidizing agents. This reaction can lead to the formation of peroxides, which may pose a safety hazard if stored for long periods without proper precautions. Acetone is a weak acid. In the presence of a strong base, it can undergo deprotonation to form the enolate ion, which is stabilized by resonance. This property makes acetone useful in certain types of organic reactions, such as aldol condensation.
These physical properties make acetone a versatile solvent with various industrial and household applications, including as a solvent for paints, varnishes, and adhesives, as well as in the production of plastics, fibers, and pharmaceuticals.
Preparation:
To ensure a durable and effective bilge paint application, it’s crucial to properly prepare the surface. Start by cleaning the substrate thoroughly to remove any dirt, grease, or oil. You can use a degreaser or mineral spirits for this step. Next, inspect the surface for any rust or old paint. If present, remove the rust using a wire brush, sandpaper, grinder or suitable rust remover / treatment. For old paint, use a paint stripper or sand it down until you reach the bare metal. Once the surface is clean and free of rust and old paint, sand it with fine-grit sandpaper to create a smooth and slightly roughened surface for better paint adhesion. Finally, wipe down the steel with a clean cloth to remove any dust or debris before applying our rust-inhibitive marine primer. After the primer has dried, you can proceed with applying our high build marine undercoat and then one but preferably two coats of the bilge paint.
Application:
Best results are obtained in warm (minimum 10°C), dry conditions.
Mix thoroughly for approximately 2 minutes using a drill stirrer. A wooden batten at least 25mm wide is also ideal.
Apply an even coat using a brush, short to medium pile roller on smooth surfaces.
For spray application by either airless or conventional spray a dilution ration of no more than 10% is recommended with Palatine White Spirit by volume.
A second coat can be applied at full strength. This will prolong the life and performance of the coating.
For application onto wooden surfaces, a minimum of two coats is recommended.
Drying Time @ 20ºC: Drying times will be extended at low temperatures.
Do not apply when ambient temperature falls below 5ºC or relative humidity exceeds 90%.
Surface dry @ 20ºC: 1 hours
Hard dry @ 20ºC: 4 hours
Overcoat@ 20ºC: After 8 hours (temperature dependent).
Theoretical Coverage: 12 – 14m² per litre.
(Coverage rate can be affected by such variables as type and condition of substrate, type of application equipment and individual method of application.)
Storage: Store in temperature range 5-40ºC
Thinners: White Spirit
