Our Profinish Exterior Satin Paint is an alternative to our Professional Satin Paint that is more suitable for outdoor use. Its unique formulation gives it additional durability, allowing it to better withstand the elements. Exterior Satin Paint is available in a wide variety of colours, including black, white, anthracite grey and many more.
Exterior Satin is suitable for both wood and metal, making it ideal for many projects, such as sheds and other wooden structures (for a matt finish, see Professional Shed & Fence), benches or metal railings.
With many exterior satin paint colours available, including black, white and several shades of greys and blues, you can find a colour to match your tastes or project. If the colour you’re looking for isn’t here, please contact us as we can also provide colour matching to RAL Classic, BS 4800 and BS 381C colour charts.
Preparation
Surface Condition: Ensure the area is free from dust, oil, grease, old coatings, and contaminants. All surfaces should be clean, dry, and free from loose or flaking material, millscale, and rust.
Metal Preparation:
* Steelwork: Degrease and remove all rust and scale before painting.
* Bare Ferrous Metals: Prime with Palatine Anti-Corrosive Metal Primer or Carboxide All Purpose Primer/Undercoat.
* Non-Ferrous Metals: Use Etching Primer or Mordant Solution.
Wood Preparation: * Bare Wood: Prime with Palatine All Purpose Primer / Undercoat.
Previously Painted Surfaces: Rub down existing gloss finishes with fine waterproof abrasive paper and rinse thoroughly to provide a “key.”
Environmental Conditions: Best results are obtained in warm (minimum 10°C) and dry conditions. Do not apply when the ambient temperature falls below 10°C.
Test Patch: Always carry out a test patch (approx. 100x100mm) to ensure compatibility with previous coatings and to confirm the colour meets your requirements.
Application
Mixing: Stir thoroughly for approximately 2 minutes using a drill stirrer or a wooden batten (at least 25mm wide). Continue to stir occasionally during application.

Coats: A second coat is recommended for maximum protection and to prolong the life of the coating. Apply the second coat at full strength once the first is dry.

Pack Sizes: 1 Litre, 2.5 Litre, 5 Litre.

(Coverage rate can be affected by such variables as type and condition of substrate, type of application equipment and individual method of application.)
Thinning: Use Palatine White Spirit.
Cleaning: Clean all equipment immediately after use with Palatine White Spirit.
If using more than one batch of the same colour, intermix before use.
Q: What is ProFinish Exterior Satin Paint?
A: This is a high-performance, oil-based satin paint specifically formulated for outdoor use. It is designed to transform and protect exterior wood and metal surfaces, providing a long-lasting, vibrant finish that can withstand the rigors of the British weather.
Q: What makes this paint suitable for the outdoors?
A: The paint features a flexible formulation that helps it resist cracking and flaking as surfaces expand and contract. It is also engineered to be highly weather and UV resistant, protecting surfaces from moisture damage and sun-induced fading or yellowing.
Q: On which surfaces can I use this satin paint?
A: It is a versatile coating suitable for a wide range of exterior applications, including doors, window frames, garden benches, railings, and other architectural elements made of wood or metal.
Q: Are custom colours or tinting available?
A: Yes — Palatine offers colour-matching and tinting services for the Professional Exterior Satin line (e.g. RAL, BS, NCS). However, as with most bespoke or tinted paints, custom-tinted units are non-returnable, since they are mixed to order.
Q: Is this satin paint weatherproof, washable, and low-maintenance?
A: Yes. The satin finish is washable and easy to maintain, making it simple to clean dirt, grime, or pollution from exterior surfaces. It’s engineered to resist moisture, UV degradation, and environmental wear. For best results, apply in appropriate weather (moderate temperature, low humidity) and maintain surfaces periodically.
