A solvent based primer that can be applied to a wide range of surfaces.
£12.32 – £60.82Price range: £12.32 through £60.82
Universal Multi Surface Primer is a solvent based primer that can be applied to variety of surfaces. It is designed for use on surfaces that can have difficulty with adhesion when using standard paints, such as tiles and plastics. The increased adhesion strength of this primer allows it to be applied to these surfaces without issue.
Alongside more difficult surfaces, the primer can also be used on wood, metal and most other surfaces, making it ideal for painting multiple different surfaces in a short space of time. Once primed, surfaces can be painted with one of our range of solvent based topcoats. These include our Cupboard Paint, Wood Paint, Radiator Paint and more!
At Palatine Paints, we manufacture our own paints rather that buying them from a supplier. This means we have full knowledge of our coatings and their use. If you have any questions about surface compatibility, preparation, application or another topic, please get in touch. You can contact our team by phone and web chat during office hours, and email at any time.
When applying to a plastic surface, we would always recommend a patch test before application. We are unable to test this primer on every type of plastic available and there may be some that are not compatible.
Please note: The multi surface primer colours shown here are only a guide. This is due to the fact that every computer monitor has a different capability to display colours. In addition, everyone sees these colours differently.
Surface Condition: On previously painted surfaces, ensure the area is sound and non-flaking.
Patch Test: Always carry out a test patch (approximately 100mm x 100mm) before full application to ensure compatibility with the substrate and any previous coatings. This is especially important for plastic surfaces.
Mixing: Stir the primer thoroughly with a drill stirrer or a wooden baton at least 2 inches wide. Continue to stir during application to avoid thickening.
Environmental Conditions: Best results are obtained in warm (minimum 10°C), dry conditions. Do not apply if the ambient temperature falls below 10°C.
Methods: Apply by brush, roller, or spray. Work the product well into the surface.
Technique: Avoid applying the primer too thickly, as this can delay drying times.
Topcoat Application: Apply the topcoat within 5 days. If more than 5 days pass, the primed surface must be lightly abraded before the topcoat is applied.
Curing: Keep the coated areas dry for at least 24 hours following application.
Please note: The colours on the product listings are only given as a guide. This is due to the fact that every computer monitor has a different capability to display colours. In addition, everyone sees these colours differently. Always carry out a test patch (approximately 100x100mm) before full application
to ensure compatibility with previous coatings and the substrate, and to ensure the colour achieved meets your requirements. Failure to do so will result in a product refund claim not being accepted

Q: What is Universal Multi Surface Primer and what’s it for?
A: It’s a solvent-based primer designed to improve adhesion on surfaces that can be tricky for standard paints—especially tiles and plastics—so your topcoat bonds properly.
Q: What surfaces can I use this primer on?
A: It is highly versatile and can be used on wood, metal, tiles, and many types of plastic. It is particularly effective for smooth or “difficult” surfaces like uPVC and ceramic tiles
Q: Can I use this primer for both indoor and outdoor projects?
A: Yes, it is suitable for both interior and exterior applications, providing a reliable base for solvent-based topcoats in various environments.
Q: Does it come in different colours?
A: Yes, it is available in White, Grey, and Red. Choosing a primer colour close to your intended topcoat can help achieve better colour depth and coverage.
Q: Do I need to do a test patch first (especially on plastics), and why?
A: Yes — Palatine recommends always doing a small test patch (around 100mm x 100mm) before full application to confirm compatibility with the substrate and any existing coatings, and to make sure the colour achieved meets your requirements. This is particularly important on plastic, because it isn’t possible to test the primer on every type of plastic and some may not be compatible.

Absolutely fantastic paint. Great coverage and very good at its job. I used this for treated roof timber as a primer. Top notch
