Product Description

Palatine Cedar Wood Treatment is a wood sealer for rough, sawn or smooth timber. It helps reduce decay, swelling, twisting of wood. Pigments have good UV fade resistance and will help protect wood from UV damage. It is an ideal treatment for outdoor Treated timber structures such as Sheds, Fences, Trellis, Pergola and timber Gazeboes.

As a wood sealer it provides excellent water repellency/beading. Oil / Spirit based for deeper penetration leaving a transparent/translucent finish colour effect to wood, where the grain texture is still visible.

Preparation

General: Ensure the wood is dry and free from dirt, dust, and any previous repellent coatings such as paint or varnish (these should be removed and sanded down as required).

Weather Conditions: For best results, avoid applying the treatment when rain is imminent or when temperatures fall below 10°C.

Testing: Always carry out a test patch in an inconspicuous area first to ensure the final colour and finish meet your requirements, as the result can vary depending on the age and type of timber.

Untreated Timber: For unpreserved or completely untreated timber, it is often recommended to use a universal wood preserver first as a primer to provide deeper protection against rot.

Application

Mixing: The product is an oil/spirit-based formulation and is supplied ready for use. Thinning is not generally recommended.

Methods: Can be applied by brush, roller, or dip.

Spray Application: It can be sprayed using an airless sprayer (such as a Wagner or Graco), ideally using a minimum 1mm flat fan tip nozzle (9–11 thou tip). Note: This product is generally not suitable for traditional pump-action garden sprayers.

Coats: * One coat provides standard protection.
* Two to three coats are recommended for best results and high-level, long-lasting protection.

Finish: It leaves a transparent/translucent finish where the grain texture remains visible.

Safety: The treatment is harmless to plants and pets once it has fully dried.

Usage Notes
* Suitability: Ideal for outdoor treated timber structures like sheds, fences, trellis, pergolas, and gazebos.
* Surface Type: Suitable for both rough-sawn and smooth timber.
* Water Repellency: Provides excellent water beading and helps reduce swelling, twisting, and decay of the wood.

Pack Sizes: 2.5 Litre and 5 Litre.

Coverage / Drying Times

Surface Dry: 4–6 hours (dependent on temperature and wood porosity).

Hard Dry: 12–24 hours.

Theoretical Coverage: 6–10m² per litre depending on whether the timber is rough-sawn (more absorbent) or smooth (less absorbent).

(For best results, avoid applying when rain is imminent or in temperatures below 10°C.)

Thinning and Cleaning

Thinning: This is an oil/spirit-based product and is supplied ready for use; thinning is not generally recommended.

Cleaning: Use Palatine White Spirit to clean brushes and equipment.

Always carry out a test patch to ensure the colour and finish meet your requirements.

If using more than one batch of the same colour, intermix before use.

Q: Will this treatment hide the wood grain?
A: No. This is an oil/spirit-based treatment that leaves a transparent/translucent finish. It is specifically designed to allow the natural texture and grain of the wood to remain visible.

Q: Is this only for Cedar wood?
A: While named “Cedar Wood Treatment,” it is a general-purpose sealer suitable for various outdoor treated timber structures such as sheds, fences, trellises, pergolas, and gazebos.

Q: Does it provide UV protection?
A: Yes. The formula contains pigments with high UV fade resistance, which helps protect the timber from sun damage and prevents the wood from greying over time.

Q: Can I use this on smooth planed timber?
A: Yes, it is suitable for both rough-sawn and smooth timber. However, note that smooth timber will typically offer higher coverage (closer to 10m² per litre) because it is less absorbent than rough-sawn wood.

Q: Does it leave a “plastic” look?
A: No. Because it is oil/spirit-based, it penetrates deep into the wood fibres rather than sitting on top like a thick paint, resulting in a more natural look.
