Carboxide Black Oxide Metal Primer is an alternative option to the more traditional (lead free) Red Oxide Primer and is solvent based and air drying. It creates a smooth, protective surface to your metal. This means it is easy for you apply your top coat without too much sanding. Use it on ferrous metal surfaces. With its rust inhibiting properties and because it is touch dry in 3 hours, Carboxide Black Oxide Primer is a great, practical choice for steel and iron surfaces. Make sure the paint cures sufficiently before applying a top coat; see the technical information for more details on this.

Carboxide black oxide primer is lead free and replaces the traditional ‘red lead’ with all the same protective qualities. Red lead, while not actually banned is harmful to health and our black oxide is a much safer alternative. If you’re concerned about working with painted surfaces that may contain lead, refer to this guide from the British Coatings Federation

Apply by brush, roller or conventional or airless spray. If painting non ferrous or galvanised metal, use Mordant Solution or Etching Primer.  If you’re unsure about which primer to use, try our online chat or drop us an email: sales@palatinepaints.co.uk.

Also available in Grey and Red.

Preparation

General: Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free from dust, oil, grease, old coatings, and contaminants.

Ferrous Metals (Iron/Steel): Primarily designed for these surfaces. For enhanced protection, consider priming bare surfaces with Palatine Zinc Rich Cold Galvanising Primer or Palatine Metal Primer first.

Non-Ferrous/Galvanised Metals: Use Mordant Solution before applying this product or use an Etching Primer as an alternative.

Previously Gloss Painted Surfaces: Rub down with fine waterproof abrasive paper and rinse thoroughly.

Testing: Always carry out a test patch (approx. 100x100mm) to ensure compatibility with previous coatings/substrate and to check the colour achieved.

Application

Conditions: Best results are obtained in warm (minimum 10°C) and dry conditions. Do not apply when ambient temperature falls below 10ºC.

Mixing: Stir thoroughly for approximately 2 minutes using a drill stirrer or a wooden batten (at least 25mm wide).

Methods:
* Brush/Roller: Apply an even coat. Use short to medium pile rollers for smooth surfaces and long pile for textured ones.
* Spray (Airless or Conventional): Dilute by no more than 15% with Palatine White Spirit by volume.

Coats: For application onto wooden surfaces, a minimum of two coats is recommended.

Protection: Keep coated areas dry for at least 24 hours after application.

Please note: The colours on the product listings are only given as a guide. This is due to the fact that every computer monitor has a different capability to display colours. In addition, everyone sees these colours differently. Sample pots are available to order upon request. Always carry out a test patch (approximately 100x100mm) before full application
to ensure compatibility with previous coatings and the substrate, and to ensure the colour achieved meets your requirements. Failure to do so will result in a product refund claim not being accepted.

Colours Available: Black. (Also available in Grey and Red as separate product variants).

Product Documents

Q: What is Carboxide Black Oxide Primer?
A: Carboxide Black Oxide Metal Primer is a traditional (lead free), high build, solvent-borne, air-drying primer designed to create a smooth, protective base on metal.

Q: Why would I choose a black primer instead of the traditional red version?
A: A black primer is the perfect choice if you plan to use a dark topcoat, like black or dark blue, as it makes it much easier to get a solid and even final colour.

Q: Can I use it on galvanised or non-ferrous metals?
A: For non-ferrous or galvanised metal, use Mordant Solution before applying this product or as an alternative use Etching Primer instead of this product. However, we would recommend using a Metal Primer due to it’s anti-corrosive properties for rust prevention whereas black oxide primer is rust inhibiting therefore it slows down rust production instead of preventing it.

Q: Is this primer suitable for use on a car chassis or trailer?
A: Yes, because it is very tough and resists salt and water, it is a popular choice for protecting the metal undersides of vehicles and trailers.

Q: Does this primer have a shiny finish?
A: No, it dries to a matte finish, which is the best surface for a final coat of gloss or satin paint to grip onto.
