Product Description

Carbosol Metal Primer Spray is an anti corrosive metal primer paint for iron and steel, now available in an aerosol format. It is based on alkyd resin and contains modified zinc phosphate and binding pigments. This means that long term protection is provided (see below). It can be used with a variety of top coats so is a good choice for metal gates and doors, architectural iron work etc.

A choice of red, white, black, buff or grey gives you several options to match your topcoat. We have a variety of suitable topcoat paints for use with this rust inhibiting, anti corrosion primer. Take a look at our range of industrial and decorative top coats here and here.

  • Suitable for mild steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, cast and wrought iron
  • High in zinc phosphate for protection against corrosion
  • Drying Time: 15 minutes
  • Coverage: 2sqm per 400ml

About rust and corrosion:

Both iron and steel are prone to rust because they’re generally exposed to air and moisture. Rust forms when iron reacts with oxygen and water, it then creates a coating on the metal surface. When rust isn’t treated, the reaction (or oxidisation process) continues. This results in corrosion, which causes significant damage to metal (see HSE for more details).

A quality primer like Carboxide Metal Primer paint will provide longer term protection against rust and corrosion. Our customers say it works even when a surface has already begun to ‘ginger’ with rust.

Preparation

Surface Condition: Ensure all surfaces are free from contamination. They must be clean, dry, and free from grease.

Rust Removal: Surfaces should be free from loose rust. While this primer is effective even on metal that has begun to “ginger” with light rust, removing as much oxidation as possible before application will ensure the best long-term protection.

Substrates: Suitable for use on mild steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and wrought iron.

Application

Initial Mixing: Shake the can well for approximately 2–3 minutes before use. Ensure the internal agitator ball is rattling and moving freely.

Technique: Spray lightly from a distance of approximately 6–8 inches (15–20cm) from the surface.

Coating: Apply light, even coats. For heavy-duty protection or harsher environments, apply several thin coats rather than one thick layer.

Agitation: Shake the container occasionally throughout the application process to keep the pigments and zinc phosphate well-mixed.

Coating System: This primer is compatible with a wide variety of industrial and decorative topcoats, making it ideal for gates, doors, and architectural ironwork.

Colours Available: Black, Grey, Red, White.

Pack Sizes: 400ml Aerosol.

Coverage / Drying Times

Surface Dry / Between Coats: 15 minutes.

Hard Dry: Approximately 1-2 hours @ 20°C (dependent on film thickness). Keep surfaces clean, dry, and free from rust or grease before application.

Theoretical Coverage: Approximately 2m² per can.

Thinning and Cleaning:

Thinning: Not applicable (aerosol). Shake well for 2-3 minutes before use until the agitator ball is free.

Cleaning: After use, invert the can and spray briefly to clear the valve. Ensure any overspray is cleaned while still wet using a suitable solvent if necessary.

Q: What is the main purpose of Carbosol Metal Primer Spray (Aerosol)?
A: This is an anti-corrosive primer in a convenient 400ml aerosol format, designed for iron and steel surfaces. It provides long-term protection against rust and corrosion and serves as an excellent base for a variety of topcoats.

Q: What materials can I use this spray primer on?
A: It is suitable for mild steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and wrought iron. It is commonly used for metal gates, doors, and architectural ironwork.

Q: What makes this primer effective against rust?
A: It is based on an alkyd resin formula that is high in modified zinc phosphate and binding pigments. This combination inhibits the oxidation process that causes metal to rust and corrode.

Q: What colours are available?
A: It comes in five colours to help you match your intended topcoat: Black, Buff, Grey, Red, and White.

Q: Can this be used if the metal has already started to rust?
A: Yes, customers have reported that it works effectively even when a surface has already begun to “ginger” with light rust, though you should always remove as much loose rust as possible before application.
