Aluminium wood primer is part of our popular Carboxide  undercoat range and acts as an outstanding barrier to protect wood and ferrous metals. It is also excellent for sealing naturally oily timber and creosote. Apply aluminium primer paint for wood as a base coat to smoke-damaged surfaces to prevent “bleeding” through top coats. Apply with a brush or roller – it is not suitable for thinning and therefore ready for spraying.  Carboxide Aluminium primer paint for wood, steel, masonry and cast or wrought iron. When applying, ensure to brush evenly in the same direction and do not paint over until completely dry.

Aluminium Wood Primer Highlights:

  • Solvent borne blend of high grade aluminium and high quality resin
  • For both exterior and interior use on new or bare timber
  • Seals weathered creosote and smoke damage stains – no bleeding through
  • Can be used as a substitute for shellac knottin
  • Also suitable to seal surfaces with a moderate coat of bituminous material applied

*  Stain Blocking * Primes resinous, scorched and smoke damaged timber * Self knotting*

The colour of this product is a silver metallic finish with the dried film appearance being matt. While giving an ideal surface for over coating, if the desired top coat was to be a pastel colour as an example “white” then the recommendation would be to use Palatine’s  Carboxide All Purpose Primer Undercoat. This will act as a more economical approach than requiring two top coats that would be more expensive and also creating a greater dry film thickness. The reason this would assist would be the opacity or more commonly known obliteration achieved by the undercoat.

Preparation

General Cleaning: Ensure all timber surfaces are clean, dry, and free from loose or flaking material.

Oily Timbers: For naturally oily woods like teak, wash the surface down with White Spirit and allow it to dry completely before priming.

Abrasion: New timber or previously painted surfaces must be abraded (sanded) to provide a “key” for the primer to bond to.

Ferrous Metals: If using on metal, the surface must be free from oil, grease, mill scale, and rust. Grit blasting is the preferred method, though thorough wire brushing may be sufficient.

Rust Removers: Avoid using phosphoric acid-based rust removers as they leave an insulating film. If used, they must be removed with a cleaner.

Safety: Wear a suitable face mask if dry sanding to avoid inhaling dust. Be cautious with pre-1960s surfaces as they may contain lead.

Application

Agitation: Stir the primer thoroughly for approximately 2 minutes. Use a drill stirrer or a wooden batten at least 25mm wide to ensure the aluminium pigment is fully mixed.

Environment: Apply in warm, dry conditions for the best results.

Technique: Apply an even coat using a brush or a short pile roller. When brushing, ensure you work in the same direction.

Coating Requirements: A minimum of two coats is recommended for both wood and metal to ensure maximum performance and barrier protection.

Compatibility: This product is supplied at application viscosity and is not recommended for thinning.

Overcoating Note: If the intended topcoat is a light or pastel colour (like white), consider using a dedicated undercoat over this primer first to improve opacity, as the aluminium finish is silver/metallic.

Test Patch: Always carry out a test patch (approx. 100x100mm) before full application to ensure the primer is compatible with the substrate and any previous coatings.

Please note: The colours on the product listings are only given as a guide. This is due to the fact that every computer monitor has a different capability to display colours. In addition, everyone sees these colours differently. Sample pots are available to order upon request. Always carry out a test patch (approximately 100x100mm) before full application to ensure compatibility with previous coatings and the substrate, and to ensure the colour achieved meets your requirements. Failure to do so will result in a product refund claim not being accepted.

Q: What is Aluminium Wood Primer (Carboxide) and what does it do?
A: It’s an aluminium-pigmented primer/undercoat made with fine grade aluminium and high-quality resin. It’s designed for stain blocking and priming interior and exterior wood, and it also acts as a strong barrier coat.

Q: What problem surfaces is it good for?
a: It’s highlighted as being ideal for resinous timber, scorched/smoke-damaged wood (to help prevent “bleeding” through topcoats), and for sealing naturally oily timbers and creosote.

Q: Can it be used on metal as well as wood?
A: Yes — it helps protect wood and ferrous metals, and it’s suitable for wood, steel, masonry, and cast or wrought iron (with correct preparation).

Q: How do I prepare and apply it?
A: Surfaces should be clean, dry, and free from loose/flaking material. Oily timbers (e.g., teak) should be washed down with White Spirit and allowed to dry. Previously painted surfaces/new timber should be abraded to provide a key. Apply in warm, dry conditions (minimum 10°C). Mix thoroughly for about 2 minutes (drill stirrer recommended). Apply an even coat by brush or short pile roller. A minimum of two coats is recommended.

Great primer, only just used mine after ordering in October 2022 (February 2023 now), just needed a good mix and ready to, one coat on bare wood took great and soaked in well to the end grain.
