Properties of Acetone:
Physical properties – Also known as propanone, a colourless, volatile liquid with a distinctive sweet odour with a molecular formula of C3H6O. Acetone is a liquid at room temperature (25°C) and standard atmospheric pressure (1 atm). It boils at 56.05°C and freezes at -94.7°C. Acetone is miscible with water, meaning it can dissolve in water in all proportions. This property makes it a useful solvent for many organic compounds. It is also soluble in many organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, and chloroform. Acetone is highly flammable. Its flash point is -20°C, and its autoignition temperature is approximately 465°C.
Chemical properties – Acetone readily undergoes oxidation in the presence of oxygen or oxidizing agents. This reaction can lead to the formation of peroxides, which may pose a safety hazard if stored for long periods without proper precautions. Acetone is a weak acid. In the presence of a strong base, it can undergo deprotonation to form the enolate ion, which is stabilized by resonance. This property makes acetone useful in certain types of organic reactions, such as aldol condensation.
These physical properties make acetone a versatile solvent with various industrial and household applications, including as a solvent for paints, varnishes, and adhesives, as well as in the production of plastics, fibers, and pharmaceuticals.

Surface Preparation: Highly effective for degreasing and cleaning metal or wood surfaces before painting to ensure proper adhesion.
Cleaning: The most popular choice for removing uncured polyester and vinyl resins, two-part epoxies, and superglue (before it hardens) from tools, brushes, and equipment.
Thinning: Suitable for thinning fiberglass resins, vinyl, and certain adhesives.
Compatibility Warning: Acetone is a powerful solvent that will dissolve most plastics and synthetic fibres on contact. Use with extreme caution around these materials.
Flammability: Highly flammable liquid with a flash point of -20°C. Keep away from all heat sources, sparks, and open flames.
Ventilation: Always use and store in a well-ventilated area to avoid the buildup of volatile vapours.
Handling: Treat with caution at all times. It has a distinctive sweet odour but is a hazardous chemical.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry place.
