Carbolin Raw Linseed Oil is a traditional and completely natural oil obtained from the extract of flax seed. Linseed oil penetrates unsealed wood to leave a natural, water resistant finish with a slightly enhanced colour.
You will find that it darkens slightly with age.
Use on oak beams, bean canes, cricket bats and many other woodcraft applications. Carbolin raw linseed oil hardens slowly when exposed to air, so use where a quick drying time is not needed. When the weather is kind, try using it on willow fencing diluted 50/50 with white spirit. Want to know more about linseed oil or other wood oils? Read our blog here.
Please take care when disposing of rags used to apply linseed oil. Rags soaked in linseed oil are a known hazard and can spontaneously combust as this East Sussex Fire and Rescue feature illustrates.
Surface Condition: Ensure the wood is dry and free from dust, dirt, grease, and any existing coatings like wax, paint, or varnish. Any old coatings should be sanded down or removed entirely.
Oily Woods: For naturally oily woods, wipe the surface with White Spirit before application.
External Use: If using outdoors, apply a wood preservative first and allow it to dry completely. Note that outdoor surfaces will require regular re-treatment.
Mixing: Shake the oil container well before use and keep it upright.
Dilution (New Wood): For best results on brand-new wood, dilute the first two coats with 30% Turps or White Spirit. For willow fencing in good weather, you can use a 50/50 mix with White Spirit.
Method: Apply the oil using a brush or a lint-free cloth.
Wiping Excess: After 10–15 minutes, wipe away any excess oil that hasn’t soaked in with a clean, lint-free cloth.
Number of Coats: A minimum of 3 coats is recommended.
Drying Time:
* Wait 24 hours between each coat.
* Hard Dry: Allow 7–14 days (or until fully dry) after the final coat before using the item. Raw Linseed Oil hardens slowly, so it is best used where a quick drying time isn’t required.
Spontaneous Combustion Hazard: Cloths or rags used to apply linseed oil can catch fire on their own.
* Immediately after use, soak used rags in soapy water.
* Lay them flat outside on a non-combustible surface to dry before disposal.
