Palatine Decorative Topseal is a solvent based coating for use on internal steelwork and available in Gloss, Satin or Matt finishes. Developed especially for use with Nullifire Intumescent Basecoats on internal steelwork and approved by Nullifire. The coating provides a top seal to protect the intumescent coating whilst giving an outstanding aesthetic finish to the steelwork.
Hardwearing and protective, with good coverage rates, Palatine Decorative Topseal is touch dry within 2 to 4 hours and hard dry in 4 hours. These times are based on application where relative humidity is below 65%. At high humidity or low temperatures, the drying times are extended.
Application Conditions
When applying Palatine Topseal, ensure that:
The product specification is appropriate for your intended requirements.
The basecoat is fully dried.
The surface finish of the basecoat is suitable for overcoating.
The correct dry film thickness (DFT) of basecoat has been applied before topsealing.
The equipment is of correct specification.
The site conditions and storage facilities are acceptable.
You are fully conversant with the Application Instructions prior to use.
Basecoat Condition: Ensure the Nullifire intumescent basecoat is fully dried and has reached the required Dry Film Thickness (DFT) specified for fire protection.
Surface Readiness: The basecoat surface must be clean, dry, and free from any contamination (dust, oil, or grease) that could interfere with adhesion.
Testing: Verify that the surface finish of the basecoat is suitable for overcoating. Intumescent basecoats can be moisture-sensitive; ensure the environment has remained dry.
Environmental Conditions:
* Apply only when air and steel temperatures are between 5°C and 25°C.
* Relative humidity should be below 80% (ideally below 65% for optimum drying).
* Ensure the steel temperature is at least 3°C above the dew point to prevent condensation.
Method: Can be applied by brush, roller, or spray. For higher-classified environments (e.g., C3), applying two thinner layers (e.g., 75 microns each) is technically preferred over a single thick layer to avoid defects like pinholes or misses.
Timing: Only apply the topseal once the intumescent basecoat is “thumb-nail” resistant (typically 24–48 hours after the basecoat is applied, depending on its thickness).
Thinning: This is a solvent-based coating. If thinning is required for spray application, refer to the technical data sheet for specific solvent/xylene-based thinner recommendations.
Colours Available: RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey, Shadelight Grey, Steel Blue, Black, Red (Red oxide colour), White. (Also available in RAL Classic, BS 4800, and BS 381C ranges upon request).
Pack Sizes: 5 Litre.
(Based on standard conditions of 20°C)
Surface Dry: 2 – 4 hours
Hard Dry: 4 hours
Overcoat: Typically once hard dry (ensure basecoat is fully dried and surface is suitable before application). Please note, drying times will be extended at low temperatures or high humidity (above 65% RH). Do not apply when air or steel temperatures fall below 5ºC or exceed 25ºC.
Theoretical Coverage: Not explicitly stated (Refer to the technical data sheet for specific consumption based on required film thickness).
(Coverage rate can be affected by such variables as type and condition of substrate, type of application equipment and individual method of application.)
Thinning: Solvent-based (refer to technical data sheet for specific thinner recommendations, typically a standard solvent/xylene-based thinner if required).
Cleaning: Clean all equipment immediately after use with a suitable solvent-based cleaner.
If using more than one batch of the same colour, intermix before use. Ensure you are fully conversant with the Application Instructions prior to use, especially regarding Dry Film Thickness (DFT) requirements.
Q: What is Palatine Decorative Topseal?
A: This is a solvent-based, fast-drying coating specifically developed and approved by Nullifire for use over their intumescent basecoats. It provides a protective seal for the intumescent layer while delivering a high-quality aesthetic finish to internal steelwork.
Q: Where can this product be used?
A: It is designed for use on internal steelwork in internal and semi-exposed environments.
Q: What finishes are available?
A: The topseal comes in three finishes: Matt, Satin, and Gloss.
Q: What must I check before applying the topseal?
A: 1. Ensure the Nullifire basecoat is fully dried. 2. Verify the basecoat has the correct Dry Film Thickness (DFT) as per the fire protection requirements. 3. Ensure the basecoat surface is clean and suitable for overcoating.
Q: Why is a topseal necessary for intumescent paint?
A: Intumescent basecoats are often moisture-sensitive or can be easily damaged. The topseal “locks in” the fire-protective layer, protecting it from the environment and providing the desired decorative color and sheen.
