A durable gloss finish paint for use on outdoor metal railings and gates.
£11.00 – £28.83Price range: £11.00 through £28.83
Palatine Gate and Railings Paint is an oil based gloss paint for metal railings and gates. It can be used on a variety of types and styles of gates and railings, including modern and older structures. The paint provides a durable finish that is resistant to weather conditions, water, wear and surface damage.
This coating provides a professional and high gloss finish that is touch dry in 2 hours. It provides a greater level of protection than most water based alternatives, ensuring a long lifespan and less frequent recoating, even when exposed to harsh weather conditions.
Our Gate & Railings paint is available in 3 colours as standard: Black, Anthracite Grey and Moss Green. These traditional fence colours create a professional and timeless look and are suitable for existing railings, especially in historic and culturally important areas.
In addition to our standard colours, we can also supply this paint in a wide array of other colours. We are able to produce many colours from the RAL classic, BS 4800 and BS 381C charts. For further details and prices on these colours, please contact our team.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any technical questions about our gate and railings paint. This includes queries about compatibility with different types of metals or previous coatings, surface preparation and priming, application or any other areas you may need help in. We are available by phone and web chat during our opening hours and aim to respond to emails sent outside of these times during the next working morning.
Surface Condition: On previously painted surfaces, ensure the coating is sound and non-flaking. Remove any loose or flaking material by wire brushing or sanding.
Abrasion: Abrade the surface (preferably using mechanical abrasion) to provide a “key” and maximize the adhesion of the paint.
Priming:
* Bare Metal: Apply Carboxide Anti-Corrosive Metal Primer.
* High Colour Variation or Pitted Surfaces: Use Carboxide All Purpose Primer Undercoat.
Mixing: Stir the paint thoroughly with a drill stirrer or a wooden baton at least 2” wide. Continue to stir occasionally during application to maintain consistency.
Testing: Always perform a test patch (approx. 100x100mm) before full application to ensure compatibility with previous coatings and to confirm the colour.
Environmental Conditions: Best results are obtained in warm (minimum 10°C) and dry conditions. Do not apply if the ambient temperature falls below 10°C.
Methods: Can be applied by brush, roller, airless spray, or conventional spray.
* Roller: Use a solvent-resistant sleeve.
* Airless Spray: Output fluid pressure at tip 1800-2000 psi; Tip Size 0.017″ -0.021″.
Technique: Apply a nice, even coat. Use a paint brush for cutting in. Avoid applying the paint too thickly to prevent drying issues.
Layering:
* For increased surface protection, a second coat is recommended.
* The second coat can be applied once the first is hard dry.
* If more than 5 days pass between coats, the first coat should be lightly abraded before applying the second.
Please note: The colours on the product listings are only given as a guide. This is due to the fact that every computer monitor has a different capability to display colours. In addition, everyone sees these colours differently. Sample pots are available to order upon request. Always carry out a test patch (approximately 100x100mm) before full application
to ensure compatibility with previous coatings and the substrate, and to ensure the colour achieved meets your requirements. Failure to do so will result in a product refund claim not being accepted.

Q: Why use a specialized paint for gates and railings?
A: Gates and railings are exposed to the elements — rain, UV, temperature changes, and corrosion. Palatine’s Gate & Railings Paint is formulated with weatherproofing, rust resistance, and adhesion enhancers to protect metal surfaces and maintain a durable, clean finish even outdoors.
Q: Why should I choose this over a standard water-based paint?
A: It offers a much higher level of protection than most water-based alternatives, making it more resistant to UV rays, temperature changes, and rust, which means you won’t need to repaint as often.
Q: How should I prepare my gates if they already have old, flaking paint?
A: You must remove any loose or flaking coatings by wire brushing or sanding and then abrade the entire surface to create a “key” that helps the new paint stick properly.
Q: Can Gate & Railings Paint be tinted or custom-matched?
A: Yes — Palatine offers colour matching or tinting services (e.g. to RAL, BS, NCS standards) for the Gate & Railings line. Do note that tinted or bespoke colours are often non-returnable, as they are mixed per order.
Q: What should I use to clean my brushes and tools?
A: Since this is a solvent-based product, you must use white spirit for all cleaning and thinning tasks.
