Primer for Epoxy Floor Paint is designed as a primer for concrete before applying Epoxy Floor Paint.  The epoxy floor paint primer is based on a blend of epoxy resin and curing agent binder. This gives the low viscosity necessary to wet the substrate and enable good penetration.

Designed for use on a variety of surfaces including concrete and masonry.  Comes in a gloss finish. If your floor is in poor condition or is concrete that has not been previously painted or matured, use the primer for epoxy floor paint to ensure Primer for epoxy floor paint provides excellent adhesion and durability, making it the perfect base for epoxy floor paint applications

  • Low viscosity means easy application
  • Excellent adhesion to a variety of surfaces
  • Great “wetting out” and penetration properties
  • Low odour means it is ideal for use in food factories
  • Good curing performance at low temperatures

Recommended Uses

  • Concrete floors (especially new or unpainted concrete)
  • Masonry surfaces
  • Exposed steel reinforcement (in concrete)
  • Poor condition or porous floors that need better adhesion
  • Food factories or hygienic environments (due to its low odour)

Preparation

Concrete Age: New concrete must be at least 21–28 days old, and the moisture content should be less than 5%.

Surface Condition: The substrate must be clean, dry, and free from laitance (the weak, milky layer on new concrete), oil, grease, or any contaminants that could impair adhesion.

Techniques: Preparation methods should include acid etching, light mechanical scabbling, grinding, blasting, or thorough degreasing, depending on the level of contamination.

Repair: Existing concrete floors should be sound; any damaged areas should be patched with a suitable repair system (like Epoxytread Patch Repair) before priming.

Environmental Conditions: Do not apply when the ambient temperature falls below 5°C.

Pot Life (Important): Once mixed, the primer has a limited “usable time” or pot life:
* Standard Cure: 35–40 minutes.
* Fast Cure: 20 minutes.

Application

Mixing: This is a two-part system supplied in pre-weighed packs. Add the entire contents of Curing Agent Component B into Epoxy Resin Component A. Mix thoroughly.

Application Method: Apply the mixed primer immediately to the prepared substrate using a roller or brush.

Film Thickness: Avoid over-application and do not allow the primer to form puddles.

Porous Floors: If the floor is highly porous, it may require two coats to ensure a proper seal.

Overcoating: The primer should be allowed to become tack-free before applying the Epoxytread topcoat system.

Colours Available: Dark Grey, Light Grey, Mid Grey, Platinum, Carmine Red.

Pack Sizes: 5kg (Two-part unit).

Coverage / Drying Times

(Based on standard conditions of 20°C)

Surface Dry: Tack-free before topcoating (Consult TDS for specific interval).

Hard Dry: Varies by curing type (Standard vs. Fast Cure).

Overcoat: Once tack-free.

Usable Time (Pot Life): 35 – 40 minutes (Standard Cure) or 20 minutes (Fast Cure). Do not apply when ambient temperature falls below 5ºC.

Theoretical Coverage: Approximately 5m² per kg (25m² per 5kg unit).

(Coverage rate can be affected by such variables as type and condition of substrate, type of application equipment and individual method of application.)

Thinning and Cleaning

Thinning: Not recommended (Solvent-free formulation).

Cleaning: Clean all equipment immediately after use with Epoxytread Tool Cleaning Solvent.

If using more than one batch of the same colour, intermix before use.

Q: What is Epoxytread Solvent Free Primer?
A: This is a two-part epoxy resin primer designed to be applied to concrete and masonry before using epoxy floor paint. It is formulated with a low viscosity to ensure it deeply penetrates and “wets out” the substrate, providing a high-strength bond for the topcoat.

Q: When is it necessary to use this primer?
A: It is highly recommended for concrete floors that are in poor condition, porous, or have never been painted before. Using this primer ensures better adhesion and long-term durability, especially on new concrete surfaces.

Q: Can this primer be used in sensitive environments like food factories?
A: Yes, it is ideal for food factories, kitchens, and other hygienic environments because it has a low odor. This makes it suitable for areas where strong chemical smells would be a concern.

Q: What are the different “curing” options available?
A: You can choose between a standard cure and a fast-cure version. The fast-cure option significantly reduces the usable window after mixing, so it is important to apply it quickly once the two parts are combined.

Q: Does the primer come in different colours?
A: While primarily a base layer, it is available in several shades including Light Grey, Mid Grey, Dark Grey, Platinum, and Carmine Red. Choosing a primer colour close to your intended topcoat can help with overall colour coverage.
