A versatile, high-performance chemical compound used across industries for its moisture-absorbing, freeze-point-lowering, and flocculating properties. Whether you’re in brewing, ceramics, construction, or food processing, this product delivers reliable results.
Calcium Chloride Flake is a compound used across a wide range of industries, including the Chemical, Manufacturing and Pottery industries. It has a number of different uses, such as de-icing, dust control and as an agent to remove moisture.
Calcium Chloride is a key component within the pottery industry to aid the application of glazes to non porous surfaces such as bisque porcelain. It acts as a flocculent, which suspends the glaze. This changes the glaze into a gel state, allowing it to stay in place when applied to a non-porous piece.
Safety & PPE: This chemical is highly hygroscopic and generates heat when dissolving. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and avoid contact with eyes and skin.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area in a tightly sealed container to prevent it from absorbing moisture from the air.
Equipment: Ensure all mixing containers and tools are clean. Be aware that calcium chloride can be corrosive to certain metals and damaging to leather.
The application method depends on the intended use:
As a De-Icer:
* Rate: Spread approximately 20g – 70g per square metre, depending on ice thickness and temperature.
* Action: It reacts immediately upon contact with moisture, releasing heat (exothermic reaction) to melt ice down to temperatures as low as -32°C.
As a Render/Cement Accelerator:
* Rate: Use at approximately 2% by weight of cement (e.g., 1kg of flakes per 50kg of cement).
* Effect: Reduces the setting time of cement-based mixes by up to 66%.
As a Dust Suppressant:
* Rate: Approximately 0.7kg – 1.5kg per square metre.
* Method: Typically applied as a 30–35% liquid solution.
In Ceramics (Flocculant):
* Add to glazes to create a gel-like state, helping the glaze stay in place on non-porous surfaces like bisque porcelain.
In Brewing:
* Add to brewing water to adjust mineral content, improving water chemistry, fermentation, and flavour (Food Grade E509).
Colours Available: White (Natural flake).
Pack Sizes: 25kg Bag.
Surface Dry: Not applicable (The flakes begin to dissolve and react immediately upon contact with moisture).
Hard Dry: Not applicable (When used as a render accelerator, it reduces the setting time of cement-based mixes by up to 66%).
Overcoat: Not applicable.
Theoretical Coverage:
* As a Render Accelerator: Use at approximately 2% by weight of cement (e.g., 1kg of flakes per 50kg of cement).
* As a De-Icer: Approximately 20g – 70g per square metre depending on ice thickness and temperature.
* As a Dust Suppressant: Approximately 0.7kg – 1.5kg per square metre (typically applied as a 30-35% liquid solution).
Thinning: For use as a liquid brine or accelerator, dissolve the flakes in water. Always add the flakes to the water (not water to flakes) and stir; the reaction is exothermic and will generate heat as it dissolves.
Cleaning: Clean all tools, mixing equipment, and footwear thoroughly with plenty of clean water immediately after use. Calcium chloride can be corrosive to certain metals and may damage leather if left to sit.

Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Use appropriate PPE when handling. Refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for full safety guidelines.
Q: What is the primary purpose of Palatine Paints Calcium Chloride Flake 77–80%?
A: This is a high-purity, fast-acting chemical compound used across various industries for moisture absorption, de-icing, dust suppression, and as a specialist additive in processes like brewing and ceramics.
Q: What makes this flake form effective for de-icing compared to standard salt?
A: Calcium Chloride is exothermic, meaning it releases heat as it dissolves, which allows it to melt ice much faster and at significantly lower temperatures (down to -32°C) than traditional rock salt.
Q: Can this product be used in food and beverage production?
A: Yes, this product is Food Grade Certified (E509), making it safe for use as a firming agent in food processing or as a brewing additive to enhance water chemistry and flavour.
Q: How is this product used in the pottery and ceramics industry?
A: It acts as a flocculant that helps suspend glazes in a gel-like state, ensuring they stay in place when applied to non-porous surfaces such as bisque porcelain.
Q: What is the chemical composition and purity of this product?
A: This product consists of 77–80% Calcium Chloride (CaCl₂·2H₂O) in a white flake form, with a typical pH level between 9 and 10 when in solution.
