Which Should I Choose?

Not sure if a two-pack epoxy system is right for your project? Our guide to compare epoxy floor paint and different floor coating systems and help you choose based on your space, traffic level, and budget.

Coo-Var ProFloor Two-Pack Epoxy Floor & Wall Paint is a hard-wearing, water-based, solvent-free two-component epoxy coating built for heavy-traffic areas (foot traffic, forklifts, vans). Simply apply it directly over existing stable coatings—no stripping required

Simple Mixing Instructions: The product comes in two containers: a large one labelled “Hardener” and a smaller one labelled “Base.” First, pour the Base into the Hardener container. Next, mix them together thoroughly, ideally using a slow-speed electric mixer. Add up to 500ml of tap water to the mix and stir again. Once mixed, the paint is ready to use. Full details on ‘Directions For Use’ tab

Before you start

First, read the Technical Data Sheet. Then wear gloves and eye protection and keep the area well ventilated. For best results, only paint onto a clean, dry surface with less than 14% moisture. Also avoid very cold weather and any risk of condensation.

Prepare the surface (this matters most)

Next, remove all loose paint, dust, dirt, oil and grease. If you skip this step, the coating can fail early.
Concrete: Clean and degrease if needed. Then remove the weak/dusty top layer. If the concrete is very smooth or dusty, use an acid etch, rinse well and let it dry fully.
Previously painted floors: Make sure the old coating is sound. After that, clean it, sand it to give a key, and remove anything flaking. Only overcoat previous two-pack epoxy coatings.
Metal: Remove rust back to a firm surface. Then degrease, sand and prime.
Wood / tarmac: Make sure it’s dry, clean and stable. If needed, lightly sand to help adhesion.

Prime where required

After preparation, prime the surface:
Bare concrete: Prime with ProSeal High Performance Primer (or Coo-Var Two Pack High Performance Primer).
Metal: Prime with a 2-pack zinc phosphate primer.

4) Mix the two-pack
Now pre-stir the base. Then add the hardener and mix until the colour and texture look fully even (scrape the sides and bottom as you go). Only mix what you can use within the working time on the TDS.

Apply

Then apply by brush or roller (use solvent-resistant roller sleeves). Cut in edges first, and roll the main area while keeping a wet edge. Apply 2 coats for best durability.

Recoat and cure

Finally, let it cure properly:
Recoat after 16 hours
Light foot traffic after 24 hours
Heavy traffic (forklifts/vehicles) after 5–7 days

Aftercare

In addition, keep it clean with regular sweeping and mopping using a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive pads, and wipe spills quickly.

Q1: What surfaces can ProFloor be applied to?
ProFloor can be applied to concrete, tarmac, wood, and metal (with correct preparation and priming). Each substrate requires specific preparationconcrete needs cleaning and acid etching, metal requires rust removal and appropriate priming, and wood/tarmac need thorough cleaning and abrasion.

Q2: Can I apply ProFloor over an existing floor paint?
It’s recommended over previous two-pack epoxy floor paints only. Applying over a single-pack floor paint is not recommended, as adhesion may be compromised. Always ensure the existing coating is stable and well-adhered before overcoating.

Q3: Do I need a primer for ProFloor?
For bare concrete, prime with a high-performance epoxy primer (e.g., ProSeal High Performance Primer). For metal, use a 2-pack zinc phosphate primer. Priming is essential for adhesion and long-term durability.

Q4: How should I prepare concrete before applying ProFloor?
Concrete must be clean and dry; acid etching may be required to remove dust/laitance and improve adhesion. Ensure the moisture content is below 14% before painting. For oily surfaces, use a degreaser or oil remover first.

Q5: How long does ProFloor take to dry and cure?
Overcoat time is 16 hours. You can usually walk on it after 24 hours, but leave 57 days before heavy traffic (forklifts/vehicles). Full cure time depends on temperature and humiditycheck the technical data sheet for exact timings in your conditions.

Q6: How do I maintain a ProFloor-coated floor?
Maintenance is straightforward: regular sweeping and mopping with a non-abrasive cleaner will keep the floor looking good. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive tools, which can damage the epoxy finish. Clean spills promptly to prevent staining, and the floor should last many years with proper care.
